How To Not Be Jealous About Dumber People Landing Better Roles?

  • I'm sure this has happened to everyone on WSO. Whether you are attending a non/semi/target, you all know someone that landed a really sick role in IB/PE/Consulting, even though that person never struck you as deserving or particularly smart.

How did you deal with the jealousy? What did you do?

Learn to be happy for others. It sounds simple, but learning to celebrate others success (even if you think it's undeserved) is one of the best tests of emotional intelligence I've found and one of the hardest things to do.

In terms of how to do that, I'd suggest reading up on Cognitive Behavioral Therapy.

Rule of thumb - just worry about yourself. You don't know what qualities the employer truly values. It's not all about grades and test scores. In fact, once they create a bar that's the least of it. Much more about people skills and potential leadership ability. EQ goes very far in the real world because the truth is, you can easily replace tech skills. Thousands of applicants have the hard skills. How many of them are viewed as potential leaders? If they don't see a future with you in a client facing role, you have a long climb.
