How to position myself to get into a private equity small-mid cap buyout fund
Hey Guys,
I am a recent college graduate and I am trying to position myself for a private equity small-mid cap buyout fund. I was thinking of taking a Masters in Finance, then getting a role as a IB analyst for Leveraged Finance, then getting a CAIA, and then applying for a small-mid cap buyout shop or working for a small-mid cap buyout shop for free to get a foot in the door. If there is a better route to getting into a small-mid cap Buyout shop please let me know.
If you want to get into levfin and middle market PE, it wouldn't hurt to learn the basic valuation methodologies, particularly the LBO. Check out sharpelbows.co to get a feel for how to model LBOs. What's nice about this is that you don't need to concurrently stress about mastering Excel AND learning the LBO.
What would be your recommendations for best modeling courses in Leveraged Finance?
Maybe try to avoid using all CAPS in your requests; good starting point.
-edit- there we go! To answer your question now, I've known actually quite a few folks who have taken the MiF route, landed a good IB gig, and had no trouble whatsoever landing interviews at reputable shops.
