How exactly does the quitting process work? Like what day should you quit and how close to your new start date? My contract has 4 weeks notice but do most firms expect you to hang around that long? How do I tell my team, and should I tell them where I'm going - I dont think theyll be very angry when I quit but I'm not sure how happily they will bear the news?

"I have signed an offer for a new position" Keep it short and sweet, I've been in the situation where I needed to stay around to finish XYZ before I left so definitely be polite about it. Your choice on whether to share any details beyond that, the situation above I had a great relationship with my manager and had been chasing him around two cities before I finally called him and told him over the phone because it was literally 2 weeks from my start date and I'd been trying to get in touch with him face to face for several days.
I'm about to leave my current role, this one I didn't like and I'm going out of industry, in this case it's advisable to just stop showing up and see how long they keep paying you.
As far as time between roles goes, your ceiling is basically set financially/by how unhappy you are in current role. Being in IB for a year I'm sure you can afford to give yourself some time off, for me the first transition I made they kept me around as long as they could, so last day was a Friday, started at new company in a different city on Monday. This time I'm planning to quit next Tuesday, which is a little earlier than I probably would because I don't start till mid July, but it's our first day back in the office and I have an ungodly commute. But don't think of it as if it's a "gap in employment," and feel free to take some time off, when you're working, regardless of industry it's impossible to take more than a week or so off, changing companies is a nice opportunity to travel, enjoy your hobbies, of just dick off and go on a bender.
I would just give them the standard 2 weeks. 4 weeks seems pretty high for any role, but you have to remember that they would cut you in a heartbeat without feeling bad about it. I am interviewing with a new firm, and I will definitely feel bad about letting my current firm down when I put in my 2 week notice. Ultimately you have to do what is best for you and move on. This is fairly common practice. People come and people go, that is life.

Yes, I’ve lateraled twice and give 2 weeks notice and typically you get paid for those two weeks but you are done working the same day to avoid conflict of interest and confidentiality issues when going to a competitor. You also go your unused PTO paid to you. Those two weeks are heaven
