How to reach out to Prop Shos, BB S&T

Alright so my primary internship of choice right now would be for a Prop trading firm, or just go straight for bank's S&T. I would rather do S&T for a BB, but I feel that is very difficult to get an internship for them from a non-target. I think they go more for quant people at top tier ivy's but I could be mistaken..

How does one go about reaching out to prop shops? Most of the ones I have liked and are in the NYC area (where I live in the summers) don't have online applications or anything detailed on their websites. Should I just cold call/email about positions? Maybe try to network via alumni at my school to see if any are trading? Also, I come from a non-target school so this also brings a large uphill battle. Should I be aggressive in these cold calls and applying around this time for a summer 2013 internship?

Do you trade your own portfolio? If so, ring them up. Prop shops care more about people who make money vs anything else (I know people who traded at home and now are at prop shops).

CC--When these people converted from home trading to prop shop trading what kind of data did they show? 3/6/12 months of profits? Do they lean towards fx/eft/stock/funds more than the others?

Yes I do trade my own portfolio, and have some decent growth from when I opened it 8 months ago. Nothing stellar though. I have essentially been spending more time on learning as much as I can about advanced options trading, Forex and futures etc. cause that's what interests me the most. I really want to land a summer internship with one of these firms, that would essentially benefit my knowledge of derivatives trading even more.

So just call up and ask if there are any open opportunities?

Even though you're from a non-target school I'm sure there is some alumni out there that are either at a small firm or bb. They would be a far better resource than cold calling.
