How to set up networking calls while working 90+ hours a week?
Hey guys,
I am currently an IBD summer intern in LA at a BB, and really want to try to either lateral to a better shop for fulltime or break into PE. How can I try to network when most of my time will be spent in the office and I am 3 hours behind those on the East Coast? The way I see it, I can either schedule calls for 7-8 AM PT and get 4-5 hours of sleep or try to take the call during the day outside the office without arousing suspicion. Any advice is greatly appreciated
Also what are your guys' thoughts for asking to schedule calls later at night or on weekends?
You’re not chained to your desk the whole time you’re in the office — grab an unused meeting room or hop outside really quick whenever you need to make a call. As long as you aren’t taking dozens a week this should be fine.
Do NOT propose a night or weekend call. You’re asking someone for a favor and want to make it as convenient for them to help you as possible — most folks aren’t jonesing to talk to some random college kid in their limited free time (not personal).
if you are a summer intern...that should only last for 2-3 months. I would suggest waiting until the summer is over and focus your main networking efforts to when you will have more free time in September. This has many benefits.
However, the above poster is correct...you probably have a decent amount of time where you are just sitting there not actively doing work. I would suggest doing research when at home on the weekends, and then fire off 1 email per firm at 10-11am on a tuesday or wednesday asking for a chat. (prep the email at home...send later during the day)
Most people break into PE AFTER 1-2 years of fulltime IB analyst work...because its good training.

You aren’t working 90 hour weeks
...the same way that anybody else in banking working long hours would network and find a job.
