How to use Linkedin

Starting FT soon and just started a Linkedin. Don't use social media at all and wish I didn't feel like I had to... so what do I do? Add my future coworkers? People I barely knew in college? Do you add your client counterparts if you're in consulting?

I wouldn't add anyone I didn't want to connect with. The goal isn't to stack up a massive amount of connections cause just like Facebook friends, the size of the number is not that relevant.

You say you are starting FT soon - did you have an SA before this? If you did then add the people you frequently talked with. When you start your position, see what other new people become frequents and add those after a week. For college it's somewhat similar - add the people you frequented with.

There is one decision that you must make tho - there will be alumni from college that you knew and you didn't as well as people you knew from your life before college. Do you want to add these people? That's for you to decide.

Thanks for the advice. So how would you go about writing that little text message. "Hey been great getting to know you over the past week, would love to connect." ?--sounds off to me... or do you send invites without any message?

I don't think anyone even sends those messages if you already know the person in real life. You just straight up add them and they will ~always accept because clearly, you are contacts in real life and that transitions over to online too.

This is what I sort-of described - we're not adding people completely out of the blue. We're adding them because we're actively conversing with them.

I agree with this except for example when you just interviewed with someone, you could add them a small thank you note and could even follow on something interesting you talked about

Out of curiosity, how did you get a FT offer without linkedin? I can't even get an internship right now

I'm in consulting, which seems inherently less networking heavy. Also went through OCR.
