how to use linkedin to land corporate banking analyst role
Hey guys,
I was just curious to see if anyone has any useful tips in using platforms like linked-in as a leverage for networking to gain at least access to interviews of (CB) Corporate banking roles or other roles of similar nature. I am currently a 24-year-old graduate with a MSc in banking and finance but with little or no CB internship experience. not being having any success with my applications so far. thanks
I know someone similar to you who set out with a similar goal to yours and did very well indeed. He was fresh out of college with no connections to speak off and within six months was LinkedIn connected with some of the biggest names in his industry.
I am not recommending his methods but I reproduce them below:
**Stage 1 - building initial contact base: **
He filled out his profile with a lot of highly exaggerated claims about himself. He considered this a "temporary" profile to get his foot on the ladder. He then targeted LIONs in his industry. (LIONS are just normal people who've built thousands of connections by connecting with every Tom, Dick & Harry). LIONs are easy to connect with and they won't get you banned by reporting you for what's called IDK (yes, read all LinkedIn rules before trying anything like this!)
But he kept it industry specific and connected only with LIONS in his industry.
After about 2 months of that and about 500 connections (500 is the magic number in LinkedIn) he moved on to Stage 2.
**Stage 2: Further bullshit for the profile: **
He bought some recommendations and endorsements to pad out his profile and give it some "depth". I believe he bought just about 5 or 10 recommendations. It probably costed him less than $100.
He also modified his profile to say right at the top that he welcomed connection requests from others in the industry.
**Stage 3: Automation: **
He used social media automation to visit 800-1000 profiles every day of CEO and other top people in his industry. Why? Because when people see you've visited their profile some of them will click on your name to see your profile. And a few of those will send you connection requests.
He built more connections this way and every time he hit a total of 600 or so, he would weed out people in his network by re-visiting the initial LIONs (and others) he added and disconnecting from those who weren't at director level or above. No PAs and receptionists and interns! But keep the total above 500.
Stage 4: The real meat
Now with a profile that was properly padded out, sufficient depth via endorsements etc., and a connection base of lots of director level people in his industry, he started to target the top CEOs and MDs. He paid LinkedIn for a Premium account and started sending out highly targeted invites.
Every connection invitation he sent out would name drop common contacts they had and he'd also include a comment or two which suggested that he had read the target's profile and/or was very familiar with his target's business. Most of them would check him out and accept his connection request.
Project complete.
When you are LinkedIn connected with a lot of important people in in the industry, you'll be surprised at how differently people perceive you. Even recruiters / HR staff.
**Six months start to finish. **
