How would you ask a managing director of a brokerage for a referral to a team that might add a new hire?

What sort of wording would you use to ask for help beyond a simple referral?
Is there any way an MD can influence a team that isn't formally hiring to add a new hire?

This MD in particular gave me an internship (no formal intern program there). I assume every team is in charge of its own recruitment needs, but in CRE brokerage, where many are ushered in through relationships and then found a home, can an MD be a mover?

What methods could they use?
How would you professionally ask to get in the door?
