HR asking for resume?

A friend of mine (actually a friend not me) is in finance at a F500 but not one of those rotational programs. He's not really looking to get into banking. Anyways, there have been significant layoffs at his firm, and he got a mail from HR asking for his updated resume saying that an employee's updated resume is part of the data HR must have. He's never been asked this before and he's been there a few years.

Does HR usually do this? Why would they want his resume? Determining who's next to go?

HR at BBs like to keep resume books of their analyst class (some circulate it around the IB internally, others send out to PE/Hedge funds, some do both). There could be openings in other parts of his company and HR wants to hire internally. If they're going to fire you they won't do it based on your resume, they'll do it based on performance.

lui:
and where are you seeing "openings in other parts of his company"???

Are you living in this world or somewhere else?? Reading papers, internet, anything???

Why are you so fired up? Is there anything wrong with MDR's comment? By the way, what does anyone risk when you send your resume to HR? If that's a sign of potential layoff, it's better that they give you some signal beforehand than catching you with your pants down.

MDR:
Lui, I am indeed living in a dream world at its fucking awesome.

Can I have directions to this awesome dream world you are living in? Mine sucks, lol.

Regards.
