HR work experience question, am I fucked??
I worked at my family’s restaurant growing up and was paid under the table except for one summer. When my background check is done (EB) will this get flagged? My father (asian immigrant) said he refuses to say I worked more than one summer if they call, when on my resume I said I worked 3+ summers. Do you think they’ll reach out to my dad in the first place? I have like 3 internships following that experience but I’m worried that I’ll get my offer rescinded. Pls help thx
Bump
I think you'll be ok...that experience is immaterial to their hiring decision. You can also tell them (if you haven't already) that the business is owned by your dad and you were "working" there. You can just say it was unpaid.
Thank you, I won’t reach out to HR unless they ask me about it then
Exactly!!!
Major bummer. Would try to convince your dad to change his position. Its not like the background check company is going to notify the IRS. If not, I think simply explaining this to the hiring manager should get it waived away. I wouldn't care personally.
Would you recommend I preemptively reach out to HR before the background check?
Start with your dad and if he can't change his position talk to the hiring manager if possible, not HR. Or is your placement at the firm still TBD?
It's a restaurant, not an internship or corporate work experience. You'll be fine - worst case, just explain and they'll probably laugh it off. If you were headed to a more corporate environment like BB I would say maybe tread carefully, but EB HR is typically very good and the leaner organization works in your favor.
you shouldn't have the restaurant work experience on your resume btw. it's not relevant to the corporate jobs you're applying to.
and nobody is going to verify it, once again because it's not relevant and have no value for the employer you're applying to.
lol why would your dad want to handicap your career outcomes? You getting this EB gig will be the first step of him having better retirement outlook..
Can’t be reasoned with on this. Comes from the Vietnam war and hates govt so I Can’t undo a lifetime of trauma and would prefer to not bother him about this
I know right, lolol
If HR asks, just give them biryani
I think you should keep an open mind and give a try anyways...
