H/S/W Chances
Hi all,
I am an international student who has been considering applying to a top MBA program in the states (this is an uncommon path in my country) and wanted to know if I would realistically have a chance at GSB, HBS or Wharton. My profile:
-
Currently working in equity research under a well-regarded analyst at a top BB (JPM/GS/MS), have been doing this for two years since I finished undergrad.
-
White male, senior member of the firm's local LGBTQI+ affinity group (I am LGBTQI+)
-
STEM major at a very well regarded university locally, top 50 internationally but little known in the US, 3.7/4.0 GPA and was awarded multiple scholarships.
-
GMAT: 740
Any guidance would be useful as I am really in the dark given the high degree of competition for these programs.
Cheers
I think you have a good chance if you have 4 total years of work experience at matriculation and at least 1 promotion. Going with 2 is probably too soon and 3 would be cutting it close. Going for it at 4-6 and you have a really good shot. Assuming you are a male and aren’t from China or India.
Decent shot at Wharton, honestly a stretch for HBS / GSB in my view -- equity research is known to be less competitive compared to IB, and I rarely see straight IB analysts (who haven't moved to PE/corporate/VC/HF) get into either of those schools apart from those who are 2+2, which isn't comparable. Apart from that, the profile doesn't scream unique, which, if you're working in something like ER, it really needs to -- caveat, I really have no idea how the LGBTQ piece plays into this though, and that could change things quite substantially. Would echo the above, need to be there at least 4 years and show a promotion to have any realistic shot.
Second everything here. With a higher gmat you might be more competitive for H/S but doubt it with a 740 as a white guy (fist bump to the retards that implement racism in the name of fighting racism).
Cheers for the feedback. I didn't study much the first time I took the GMAT so could try bump it up a little. I've considered doing an internal transfer to the firm's IBD to widen my exit opportunities, would doing another 2 years in IBD materially improve my chances? Thanks
My bet is the Adcom will be wondering why the LGBTQ piece didn't automatically promote him after the first year.
What are your post-MBA plans? The holistic profile is what matters so if you can provide a little more color on what you've done, what options are available to you and why you want an MBA it would be helpful.
