HYP 4.0 CS Major -- Want to recruit EBs. Is BIWS guide enough with two finance internships?
HYP sophomore. I have no finance/accounting background but recently got interested in IB recruiting due to FOMO. I will do finance-related internships this Spring and Summer to make myself competitive for these roles. I skimmed Rosenbaum, and although it seemed interesting, I didn't have much of an idea of what was going on. Do I have to memorize this book to be competitive for EBs, or will the BIWS guides suffice on their own? Can these guides be mastered in two months without a finance/accounting background? I can devote ~15 hours per week to the task. Thanks!
Not sure. I landed an IB gig at an EB, but I didn't come from HYP with a 4.0. I don't think our situations are at all similar.
Yes you can master these BIWS guides in a couple weeks. The 4.0 in CS at HYP shows banks you are clearly smart enough for the job. They just want to know you are interested. Make sure your “why banking” makes sense.
Thanks for the reply! Will a conceptual mastery of these guides be enough to pass technical interviews at EBs? I don't want to risk being underprepared.
Why the FOMO? Why waste your talent doing IB if you have a 4.0 in CS? Makes zero sense, coming from an IB analyst, you’re not missing out on anything except mundane bullshit and long hours
Potential PE/HF opportunities down the road are much more lucrative than SWE roles.
Not sure if this is true on a risk adjusted basis, but you should do what you’re interested in since either path is going to leave you in a more than adequate position financially.
On an hourly basis, frankly, you're still way better off with FAANG SWE. Ignoring them, prop trading-type opportunities such as at JS, 2Sig etc., are certainly accessible to a HYP 4.0 CS major and both pay way better than IB and don't necessarily require 70-100hr weeks.
Or he can recruit then renege later. Might as well have a top IB offer in the back of his pocket until he interviews for better jobs later on
Look around on the forum for interview prep threads/guides. Many people have been in similar situations, just gotta use the search. You got enough time to prepare
