I am acquainted with a JPM MD, who suggested we should talk. As a college student how much authority does a JPM MD have in hiring interns?

I mostly want to know what I can expect from this conversation.

Also, if anyone could collaborate on the the JPM Quantitative Analytics Internship Program or the JPM Asset Management Internship Program (can't post links), that would be great.

Thanks.

You say that he's a friend or someone you knew your whole life but based on your post you're being so awkward about it, and makes me question how much you know the guy.

Just be chill with him, first have a normal conversation with him about anything, and then you should begin to talk about yourself, your aspirations, what you want to do in finance, your background. Just talk with him, ask him basic questions. Use common sense. If he's interested in helping you, he'll answer your questions. You can ask if you can use him as a referral and if he can point you to someone he knows in the group you're interested in that would be willing to speak with you.

Keep it simple, don't overthink it. Yes an MD carries a lot of weight in the decision process, and your resume will definitely be reviewed if he vouches for you, even if he doesn't work in the group you want to intern in. Not sure if he can get you an interview as I've heard JPM is starting to develop policies against nepotism.

JPM doesn't take referrals into account anymore. This is coming from multiple alumni from my school, as high up as one of the co-heads of an IBD group.

You apply and do your hirevue, hope for the best, and then HR decides whether you get an interview + whether you get hired or not. The above poster was right, it's to counteract nepotistic processes.

I'm one of multiple students (10+) from my school who had referrals from current employees, but I'm the only person who got a superday from them (so far at least). It's all luck and dependent on whether HR likes your profile. Just apply, crush the hirevue, and hope for the best.

I know that they do that for undergrad for sure for CIB, but I wouldn't rule it out for graduate programs, especially something quantitative.

I respectfully disagree with your disagreement. I got the referral email and I got the offer too, but HR + the people who referred me were quick to tell me that the reason I got an interview and offer was not because of the referral.

And as I mentioned, even the alum from my school who’s a co-head told me that they mean nothing. We used to get reserved superdays for 3 people and we had a whole school process, but they did away with that about 2 years ago when they stopped counting referrals.

Start off with thanking him for talking with you and chat about what you’ve been up to recently if he is actually someone you’ve known a long time. If he knows your parents and siblings mention that they’re doing good. Then ask him ask him the normal questions. Don’t ask for a job or interview. Just ask for advice and his recommendations. IF he’s someone you’ve known all your life and is a family friend or whatever and he’s actually  willing to help you by leveraging his network, you could ask him to connect you with his friends... and if he’s actually your friend, he might connect you with people outside of JPM if this is more of an informational interview. Obs don’t do this if you only want to work at JPM, only do it if you’re looking to explore different industries. I did this as an underclassman unsure of my finance career path and an alum connected me with a ton of her friends (cfo of Fortune 500 company, wealth management, trader, asset manager etc). Big thing to note was that she is an alum of my college and her kids are good friends with my brother. I’d personally never met her before we got coffee though.

Rather than splitting hairs, use the networking/referral scenario to your advantage. It can certainly help you IN the interview (not a comment on whether or not it helps you getting the interview). Find out about the role, career track (zoom out and zoom in), actual activities, culture, etc. Ask who else you should be speaking with to get a great feel for things that are more micro. Speak to as many people as you can, build rapport, build lots of fans. You can refer to them in your actual interview (at least if you get to a super day). They'll appreciate how much effort and research you did.
