I don't like someone my boss wants in the team, what should i do ?

Hi there,
this is kind of a weird question.
But basically we are a "sub-team" of two. My new boss just arrived half a year ago, he has like 8y exp, while i have more like 2-3.
Plan was for him to get me + a guy with ~5y exp which was fine. Then this guy left within the garden leave period so it's only the 2 of us.
I get along VERY well with this boss, i am still surprised we are so much on the same page.
Now he is disappointed that the team is smaller than expected so he wants to get someone, and he zoomed on a guy from my graduate class to join us, that i particularly dislike for personal reasons. (i think he is competent, but "bad competition", tends to do backstabbing and creates useless tension, + we'll have to compete for VP slot next year so even more tension)
I think it could bad enough that it would make me consider leaving within next year as i am not in the mood for this shit, which will definitely happen given history i know about this guy.
He is still "thinking about it" I don't want to wait until it's decided to get upset.
How do you think i should play this ?

Thanks a lot !

Definitely talk to him about it. Given that you're already working with your boss, I'm sure he'd value your opinion. But don't make it seem like you're just trying to clear the playing field for yourself. If this guy is truly so miserable to work with, your boss would definitely want to hear about it before he takes him in.

Framing would be key imho. As long as you can make it sound like your previous interactions with him, make you feel like he would not be a "good fit" and a nuisance to the "team dynamic" I'm willing to bet that your boss won't be willing to bring someone on who already has a bad review. Having said so, reading this post makes me realize how important it is to be generally liked by your graduating class so that it doesn't come and bite you in the ass down the line...

As someone who has managed people, I would really want to hear about a potential bad seed before hiring them. I've had this exact scenario happen in the past, and I took my colleagues recommendation and found someone else. As a boss you'd much rather keep your existing employees happy than make an easy hire. There are always plenty of other candidates out there.

Yeah, this to a T. OP, you're a known quantity and you seem to get along with your boss professionally and on a personal level. Just talk to him. He won't want to lose you, let alone make a bad hire. Don't mention at all about fighting for the VP position though and try not to completely shit on other guy, but just say you had bad interactions with him in school and don't think he'd be a good add. It's a really good time to recommend someone you think would be a good hire.
