I need motivation!

As of late I've been lacking motivation to do anything except the bare minimum - and even that I'm struggling with. I find myself lacking energy/motivation to get ahead, and the worst part is, I'm COMFORTABLE with just coasting along. I know this isn't right and will harm my future/career prospects in the long run, but I'm just completely lacking drive to succeed. If any of you have faced something similar before and got over it, please share advice. Thanks.

Yeah, man.

We all go through it. When I'm facing a lack of motivation and need a short-term boost I go on Zillow at look at some nice houses and picture myself and family in them. It's super materialistic and sometimes I feel like a dork but it works for me.

For long-term, I also read non-fiction books about people I idolize. Reading about the struggles they went through and overcame is fascinating and motivating. Right now, I'm reading How To Turn Down Three Billion Dollars. It's how Snapchat was started and very interesting. The Upstarts and The Everything Store are also good reads.

Think about the long-term. If you keep doing what you're doing (or not doing), where are you going to be in 10 years? Are you putting in enough work each day to be successful in the future? Identify what you believe is successful, and determine whether what you're doing is going to get you there. If it's not then you're wasting time.

Life is fucking SHORT man. Play Fortnite when you earned it and make sure that every day you spend time working towards being the person you want to be 5 or 10 years from now.

Also understand that if you're someone who wants to just coast, then it's cool. You can be financially stable, pay your bills, take some trips with the fam, and live a great life by putting in average work. But something tells me that's not your personality which is worrying you.

Turn it around before it becomes a habit.

I haven't felt that way since I was 17 in HS. When I was 18, I began training for a position that required 100% drive and motivation and haven't really turned back since then.

I would recommend finding what you love and are passionate about. Once you find that, the sacrifice needed to attain the fulfillment of this passion will drive you to great lengths.

"If you always put limits on everything you do, physical or anything else, it will spread into your work and into your life. There are no limits. There are only plateaus, and you must not stay there, you must go beyond them." - Bruce Lee

I second this. Ex NAVY seal sergeant says making your bed in the morning gives you that small "accomplishment" to start the day and makes you feel good. You're obviously talking about goals that are larger than making your bed but the principle is the same I feel.

This is actually a book titled "Make Your Bed: Little Things That Can Change Your Life...And Maybe the World" by William H. McRaven. It's a very nice and short read and helps develop not only motivation but good habits all around.

If nothing else works for you, get a fast food job, maybe over the summer or whatever. For me, the experience was a much needed wakeup call. It was so god awful and I realized if I didnt get on my shit, that was the miserable existence the future held for me so something had to change. Fear is a fantastic motivator. If youre on here, I think its probably safe to assume you've worked way too hard to just end up among people who really never did shit.

It also helps because if youre among people who work in or are working toward the finance industry it can be easy to forget how shitty being average is. You're better than that. You belong among the elite and you know it.

I'm aiming for The Strand at Headlands come retirement. Not even close to retiring but I find specificity is key when trying to stay motivated with things like that.
