I suck at one-way interviews, any tips?

Hey, I'm currently going through ft recruiting from semi-target, non-US. Some corporate finance positions have these one-way video interviews coming up. I always do poorly because I can't gauge the interest of the other party and tailor my story, or make jokes like I normally do. In contrast, I come across as nervous or robotic, neither qualities employers look for.

Any tips or advice?

It’s a skill to be able to interview and have one on one conversations. To be able to turn the interview into a casual conversation and still be able to be professional but chill. Practice, practice, practice. Get a buddy and do mock one on ones. Get that story of yours down..probably the most important thing from MY experience. Focus on that first then into talking to the interviewer and turning it into a conversation than a interview. It won’t happen over night but keep practicing. Everyone interviews differently, that’s just how I did it, turn it into a casual conversation that involves talking about yourself and getting the interviewer to do the same

Record yourself reciting your responses to the top 20 behavioral questions. Do this every day until it becomes second nature, then throw in a few umms and ahhs to make it seem natural.

Sadly being a target or having a strong pull is no longer enough to defeat the terror that is HireVue. Everyone has to benchmark reasonably well on hirevue first before going to the next rounds.
