I was basically told I could expect an offer by the weekend but then I didn't end up getting one as the firm wants to finish interview process with other candidates now.

Basically had a super day on Friday - interviews went well (a couple of senior associates and principal at MF).

At the end of my last interview with a senior associate, I asked about next steps. He said:

  • Could have answer as soon as the weekend
  • Question was thrown back to me and I was told to give my interest, said this firm was my top choice

Then had a convo with the head of the group, which went decent but less than ideal.

Today, after sending out thank you emails to various people in the group, the HR lady called me and said that "my conversations went well but it's a competitive process so they're wrapping up interview process with others too" and asked about my interest level again in the firm. They said I should know soon.

What do you guys think this means?

I think I'm going to start searching for other similar roles right away but is it worse than it sounds?

Sounds like you were a good candidate but not perfect. They are probably still looking to see if anyone is better. Best way I see it, they see you as a solid 7/8, but are looking to see if there is a 9/10 candidate.

My advice, start recruiting elsewhere, and bluff them saying they are your top pick but you are finalizing with other firms. This puts pressure on them to either risk it and potentially get no one, or extend the offer
