I Work on Baby Deals: Will It Hamper My Growth?
I'm at a non-NYC regional boutique (DC/Philly/Boston/Miami) and getting great transaction experience on M&A deals, specifically tech. Only thing is our average deal size is like $20-$100mm in Enterprise Value. Obviously over the years I can build up three good $100m+ deals for my resume but when it comes to Corp Dev, IB lateraling, Growth PE, etc. will my options be super limited? Is lateraling to a MM as an Associate doable?
Following
Definitely doable, but why not try and lateral as an analyst? As long as you have deals on your resume it is pretty easy to lateral.
Well I came in as an An2 from Transaction Advisory and figured I should stay two years anyway so as after I get my 2nd Analyst bonus I may look for buy side/corp dev/MM IB opportunities. Just don't wanna hop around too quick.
Very doable. Was in the exact same position doing deals
Good stuff! Where did you end up slash what opportunities were available?
its been a strong lateral market. What most banks (in my experience) cared about was ability to take on responsibility and see the deal through
From what I have seen from my friends and network at the boutique level. They typically have no problems lateraling to corp dev. The ones that transfer banks typically go to the same level. Out of the 5 cases of laterals I have seen from boutiques only one was upwards in title (ANA->ASO). and that was a niche group to same niche group.
Word I wouldn't be trying to move up in title just want to put in 2 years before hopping jobs so at that point I'll be Assoc.
Personally the market is pretty favorable to jumping right now. I would wait a year and then look to jump to analyst a MM or a BB. I think that will yield better results.
Mind if we connect in PMs - have some questions for you as I'm trying to lateral to banking?
Interned at a regional boutique and keep in touch with my old coworkers. A couple lateralled to MMs, one as an analyst and one the second they got their associate promotion. A couple others left to corp dev - both at companies that bought their clients (bank did sell side deals only).
