IB Associate Recruiting
Hello Friends,
Just want to bounce this off the wonderful community here. My friend who is not on WSO is planning to recruit for IB Associate gig at a Top 20 MBA program. Problem with her is that she worked at a BB Bank BO (GS/MS/JPM) in an emerging market and now wants to recruit at one of those Banks(where she worked pre MBA) . Issue with her is that she was rated in bottom bucket so she had to leave and then got into top 20 MBA. Is it possible to return to the bank where she was working? Will she be automatically disqualified because of her rating?
Thanks.
They are going to ask her former boss about her performance so she will probably be automatically disqualified
I mean this could happen but I don't see any reason to not go for it. That's just one data point overall and by the time they would be asking the manager, it would be near the end after all of the interviews.
Obviously she should apply anyways
Is there anyway she can communicate to this banks(GS/MS) that her managers screwed her rating for no fault of hers? She performed very well but was rated well by 5/6 people. The one person who did not rate her well was a VP who did not really know anything about her and just rated her poorly based on perception.
What are you basing that assumption on? The OP didn't say that she performed "very well"? If she was bottom bucket then she was bottom bucket, there are many ways to not get rated that way and the fact that she couldn't avoid it says something about her work ethic.
I honestly think it would be a waste of her time to apply at the same bank she already (somewhat) failed at. There are plenty of other banks to try her chances at where she doesn't already have a reputation as someone who doesn't work as hard as her peers.
I doubt it's useless simply because she's applying for a different function in a different country. Chances are good that they won't call the BO manager until after super days anyway.
If asked about her previous role, she could always say, "I liked the experience working for bb. The culture coming down from the top was really attractive to me personally, but I didn't exactly click with my office-mates or enjoy the types of responsibilities."
She was poorly rated not because she poorly performed but because she was 'perceived' as a poor performer. In terms of metrics she was the best but since the VP who rated her poorly(1/6 people-remaining all rated her well) had more pull in the team, his rating outweighed everybody else's . In short, she was screwed for no fault of her's. Anyway to communicate this directly to the Bank since it is in a different country and for FO not BO.
