IB in SF -> Buyside in NYC

How hard is it to land a buyside gig in NYC after being an analyst with a tech focused IB group in SF / Bay Area? If I’m interested in working in tech but also want to live in NY, what is the best way to make this happen? I’m currently an SA at a top tech group in SF / Bay Area but my bank makes it extremely hard to lateral internally after being an SA. Thanks!

I would think there is mobility between those two areas. Especially if you come from sf tech that might be seen as higher quality in some verticals compared to ny tech in those verticals. Best I think is to try to network and find those who have done it. I would think it’s more common than you may think or know of as of now

Tech is a big space. In some verticals within tech, the SF tech companies may be stronger. For example it might be fair to say that consumer tech / software tech may be stronger in SF than in NY. On the other hand, it may be possible that fintech or adtech may be stronger in ny than in sf. Hard to know. Someone in the industry may have more color on the relative “strength” of subverticals in tech and where they are. I’m not sure exactly. Just an idea to try to help. Another potential example to try to make sense is that healthtech may be particularly strong in Boston as compared to other cities maybe

I've heard that it's tough because it doesn't make sense for NY firms and recruiters to venture out to SF when there are 7x the analyst pool to choose from in NY. I don't have any experience with it tho, maybe someone else does?

Isn't recruiting from non-NYC cities for NYC PE easier now bc of Zoom?  Aren't a lot of first round interviews still going to be done over Zoom?
