IB & K-F Business School

Hi guys,

I'm looking to break into IB and after 20 months in NYC, can't seem to do it coming from a non-target. I have applied to a few top-20 b-schools and today received an invitation to interview at UNC's Kenan-Flagler. Care to enlighten me on how this school stacks up with BB or boutique IBs? Is it considered strong on the street? If IB is not the school's strong suit, are there any other areas of finance (AM, S&T, HF, etc.) that can be considered a more feasible route upon graduation from KF?

FWIW, I was also invited to interview at Georgetown's McDonough - any comments there?

Thanks guys!

There's def an alum presence on the street for undergrad, I can't speak for MBA. I have however met a woman who was a summer associate for McKinsey in SF last summer from there. So would imagine if you can break in to McKinsey, it's possible to the street.

I'm an undergrad at K-F, but I feel pretty comfortable speaking about this because of the amount of time I spent networking with MBA students who were summer associates.

MBA recruiting here is solid but not spectacular. If you make the effort, network and show you're intelligent, it shouldn't be too difficult to find something - at the same time, banks aren't exactly lining up at your feet.

The two banks that recruit pretty heavily from K-F are MS and Barclays. This has a lot to do with the alumni network (Paul Parker, head of global M&A at Barclays, is a UNC guy and loves bringing K-F MBAs on as associates). However, in the past two classes, I've met MBA students from K-F that went to CS, UBS, Moelis and GS as well.

Of the aspects of finance you mentioned, K-F is definitely the strongest in IB (unless you count real estate, but that's a different story). I don't see it as a particularly quantitative school, and most of the guys who are on the investments side of things end up in AM rather than HF or S&T.

Some other things I think you should take into account: Chapel Hill is a great place, there are tons of hot girls (even the MBA students ain't that bad), and you'll get the chance to catch UNC football and bball games. Price of living here is not especially cheap, but pales in comparison to b-schools in big cities (Gtown, NYU, Columbia).

Feel free to PM me with any questions and I can put you in touch with MBAs from here going to IBs as well.

metalasian,

Thank you for taking the time to write that up, very insightful. I am very familiar with UNC undergrad, franklin st, the place with the HUGE deck and the football stadium - I watched the REAL Carolina kick some tail there ;-) All joking aside, I couldn't have asked for better information. I will likely go ahead and interview with them in the next 2 weeks and further explore my option within the program once I am on campus. Thank you again for taking the time.
OP,

I'm a 1st year at KFBS and I can provide you some pretty detailed info about this season's IB recruiting. Send me a PM.

Metalasian is very on point about Chapel Hill and there is not much I can add. Except perhaps this NYT article I came across today:

http://www.nytimes.com/2010/02/07/fashion/07campus.html
Yeah.. I know half the people in that pic and should've been that dude. Emily Kennard, the girl in that article, told me go out with them 'and chill with a guy from the New York times writing a story about dating at Carolina.' Instead, I fell asleep. Damn, I could've looked like a pimp.

I would think BofA has to recruit there no? I'm looking for internships in Charlotte and Atlanta and all their offices are filled with with people from UVA, Duke, and UNC. Also on a side note... and I'm sure that this isn't the consensus (I hope not), but when I went to visit it was not a good weekend. Incredibly stuck up, bitchy girls. They HATED anybody from our group that went to northern schools. It was very weird and I've heard this from several other people as well whenever I tell them this. However, On Top of the Hill was an awesome restaurant!!!

Eh, I think it depends on who you meet. You can always come across some elitist sorority girls who don't appreciate you if you're not from raleigh or charlotte, but that's exception rather than the rule.

BAML is definitely a firm I completely forgot about, and they are flush with UNC alums, both in Charlotte and NY. I would add them to the list of firms who recruit heavily from KFBS.
