IB or FAANG?
I am starting my postgraduate studied this months and wanted to get your opinion on what's the best career path.I'd love to work in IB but I also know that big tech is also a great career path. What is the most sustainable and long-lasting choice? I feel like lay offs happen much more often in Faang than in IB, what about the « exit » options as a former Faang in that case? (let’s assume Sales/Finance roles)
This is a tough one without knowing you personally, but I believe that intelligent, educated staff can work in many different places and shape a career for themselves. I applied at Google and had the entire row of interviews before I went into IB. I don't regret going into finance instead of tech, but I really liked the Google folks I met during the rounds. They were so much nicer, sociable and laid back.
Ask where you see yourself in the next years of your life and where each industry is heading.
Let me start with this -- it's going to be easier to go from IB to Big Tech than from Big Tech to IB. It sounds like you're interested in banking, so you might as well give it a shot. If you're in a two-year program, doing an internship is the obvious way of getting a sense of whether you like the job enough to do it full time.
You emphasized sustainability and long-term career path. Both are going to have plenty of opportunities, but tech is going to be far more sustainable. A lot of people underestimate the toll banking hours have because they are "hard workers", but it's hard to describe the frustration and exhaustion until you've really lived it. That's why so many people leave after a few years. That being said, it's important to remember that you can always change jobs. Just because you choose one or the other now doesn't mean you have to (or should) do that job for the rest of your career. Banking can open up a lot of opportunities.
Both FAANG and IB have layoffs, but whether the % is higher in one or the other isn't very relevant at this stage of your career. It's not like they are doing mass layoffs at whim. Just focus on doing well in your role, and chances are you'll be okay. And if you get laid off because of factors outside of your control, then you'll just move onto the next job.
Everything in this thread is just wrong. Read his fucking post. He's not trying to be an SWE. He's asking for sales/finance roles at FAANG, which outside of corp dev and pm (which he isn't going to land out of school), are mediocre. FAANG is not special outside of SWE and tech roles man. If you can't/won't actually do a tech role, go to IB.
