IBD Compliance internship to IBD

Hi all,

I study engineering at a top 10 world university and have a pretty high grade. This coming summer I have an internship lined up at a BB bank in Compliance (I know, I know what everyone's going to say); I'll likely do IBD Advisory Compliance if this is an option, which I'm fairly sure it is. Note I have no intention of renegging; I don't want to get a bad rep before even starting.

My question is seeing as I study engineering at a target school and am doing well gradewise, as well as the fact that I've interned as a consultant for a top 5 consulting company in the past, would it be at all realistic for me to break into IBD post graduation? I'm not just talking at the BB bank that I'm interning at, I mean in general at boutiques and such. If not, given the above information, in your own opinion is there any FO position that I could shoot for, or should I just go to Management Consulting instead?

Thank you very much for your input, very much appreciated.

It will be extremely tough. The truth is most BB/EB groups don't want to take the chance on hiring someone FT that doesn't have prior IBD summer experience.

Network with the IBD guys and girls in the groups you are interested in, stay on top of HR, and practice your technicals for the interviews.

If you're at a BB there should be a formal mobility application mid-way through the summer.

Boutiques (assuming you mean EB) are going to be way tougher. They generally only hire summer analysts from BBs/PE firms. If you're talking about regional boutiques or MM firms, you may have a chance with some good networking.

Consulting...given you've interned before you should have a chance. Depending on the school you are at FT consulting recruiting will be after August. So you can still go through FT IBD recruiting and then do consulting after if it doesn't work out.

Thanks very much for your response. This is indeed what I thought; in your opinion would it be more feasible to get into a risk role via my summer internship? This is indeed another area I'm very interested in, and the competition will admittedly be substantially less fierce I imagine.
