IBD that requires coldcalling?
Just came from interview with a decent size boutique and was told the job would require some cold calling and I was wondering exactly what type of role they were looking for. Never heard of any cold calling in ibd before and have no clue what it could entail.
Sounds like calling up a bunch of small companies and asking the CEO if he'd be interested in selling.
They may have been referring to cold calling potential buyers or investors for deals. Often, small boutiques will not have relationships with every potential buyer/investor so someone will have to make cold calls to those firms. The MDs/partners will stick to the most likely parties and ones they have relationships with. The others will sometimes be split amongst the rest of the deal team, including analysts. It's really not that bad. If a company makes your list, there should be solid rationale for you to be calling them and more often than not they will be responsive.
If they are going to have you out prospecting for deals/sell-side mandates, you may not be in for a great experience. Since you referred to them as "decent size", I would guess it's probably not sourcing.
