IB/Research to Corp Strat/Dev

Quick question wanted to run by everyone if possible. I spent some time in investment banking particularly in one industry (1-3 years experience) and now am working in equity research with a top ranked analyst in a subsection of that same industry. I made the switch because I am very much interested in my industry (healthcare, technology, consumer) and wanted to take a deep dive spending time analyzing individual companies/individual products or services and their prospects.

I am thinking about my longer term career and at least at this stage I could really see myself working in an internal strategy / Corp development type role with the goal of hopefully putting myself on the CEO or GM route in the longer term. I know this is obviously very difficult but that’s the direction I want to go at least, within my sector I currently work in.

1) Is it feasible for someone in my position or others with IB and research exposure to switch into roles like these? I am not interested in investor relations to be clear, I want to avoid having a market oriented job and am not interested in hedge funds and instead would rather spend less time thinking about investors and more about core of the business etc.

Let me know if you have thoughts, would appreciate any input at all from someone with experience in corporate side.

2) I also welcome any input from people in these types of roles that have made the switch from sell side on how the transition has been

3) Also interested to hear input on career trajectory and the best time to enter industry (spend more time on sell side)/get mba etc vs leaving now for Corp dev after a year or so more here

This is going to be harsh, so I apologize in advance.

So you graduated in 2017, started in investment banking full time presumably June-July of 2017 and in the span of a year and a few months, moved from investment banking to equity research and now you want to move again?

Without additional context, it seems like you either: 1) Have no idea what you want in which case, why would anyone take you? You'll just jump ship in 6 months once you get bored again 2) You keep getting pushed out / fired within a very short time-frame.

Feel free to correct anything I got wrong. Assuming the above is correct, would highly recommend you stay where you are at least for another year. Then reevaluate.

Thanks for the response I really was not clear enough by virtue of the fact that I am trying to be vague as to not be identified but your timeline is roughly correct. I was thinking about making the switch about 2 years from now as I am very happy and doing great in current role. Did well in prior role too but was disappointed by the learning experience, having learned substantially more in research than in banking now. It’s crazy how much more time is spent thinking and modeling in research comparatively including accretion dilution and 3 statement albeit not much lbo.

I liked dealmaking but too much time was spent on marketing materials and logos and almost no time spent on actual modeling, critical thinking, strategic thinking or industry analysis. Spent too much time processing vs thinking and that dynamic has changed dramatically in current role.

The goal of this post is really to just explore and think about things ahead of time so I can influence my experience while I can and at least do some prep over the next 2 years.

Edit: also to be more clear, I initially thought I wanted to do Private equity but found I’m more interested in industry side and research was a way for me to get closer to operator route and industry side while I still develop key skills and get exposure quickly
