Idea Sourcing for Hedge Funds

I work in RE. I identified an opportunity and prepared a research report on a public company within one of the sectors we specialize in (healthcare R/E), is trading at a huge discount to underlying NAV.

After putting together a long report, I called and tried contacting some people in the hedge fund space and told them I would be willing to share my research in exchange for some compensation.

Everyone I have spoke to so far has basically said they dont pay for research. One guy even said that finding good research is simple and the name of the game for a HF manager is hiring analysts (who do the research) and all a HF manager needs to do is raise money and right size a portfolio. He basically said good ideas are cheap.

In R/E and P/E, its the deals and the associated strategy to extract value which is difficult to find. Not the other way around.

He said his analysts look through the ideas and his job is to high-level size positions and portfolios, etc.

Is this correct?

Would love to hear peoples thoughts.
