Idiot MDs
Guys, need advice.
I have a great working relationship with the MD ("A", for the sake of this post) I work for and get top ratings from him at reviews but above him is one of the co-team heads ("B" - I never ever work for the other team head) who is a complete ignorama who's a walking miracle (that he hasn't been canned yet). I do 90% of my work for A, which is great, but from time to time I have to help with B's projects, and every time that happens I feel like I want to throw the pitch book at him and walk out.
I like my job for the most part, and the abovementioned isn't enough for me to jump ship, but this idiot being will have a large say in my being justly compensated come bonuses (he came up with some BS reason to write my midterm review grade down one notch). Any tips on how to go about improving my situation?
A) just grin and bear it...wouldnt do anything to jeopardize your bonus or for him to deep six a PE gig...
B) try and spend even more time with MD A...maximize time with him...if you have a staffer, use him/her to max your workload with A and have the other analysts to B's work
you have to be liked by everyone if you want to get ranked top.
that includes working your a** off on some non-sense work for B, in this case. That being said, if you want get
1) out after 2 years to a top pe, you need to get ranked top; so you from now on, work as hard as you can for B and fulfill his every needs,
this might sounds pathetic but personally i think it is ok to do nonesense work for him, 50% of the banking work is nonsense anyway, he will probably realize someday that all the work he made you do is nonsense and will feel bad and reflect this in your review in a positive way. just be professional about it and treat banking like a job more than a training, part/majority of the job is to do what seniors want to see.
just suck it up and get out after 2 years.
2)if you want to stick in banking or go to b school then do what the post above said, avoid B and work as much as A and make sure A likes you. while not liked by everyone probably won't get you top ranked (which is not too important for staying in a bank or going to b school), but having a MD who strongly endorses you will keep you in the bank (if you get more senior to associate level, he proably will take you whereever he goes)
.
If you want to throw comb bound books at the man, he's probably able to pick up on that from various non-verbal cues, don't you think?
