If the market were to crash like it did in 2008, how would it affect the social fabric of the US?

Times today are divisive—social media is probably responsible for a lot of the mania, egotism, hostility & virtue signaling, etc.—would a market crash send us into a dystopia? We don't know how social media has affected the national psyche and we haven't had a crash under these circumstances before.
