IF YOU EVER NEED A LESSON IN NOT GIVING UP

If you ever need a lesson in not giving up and fighting for it till it is really over, look no further than what our Women's National Soccer team did today.

Down to 10 men(or women in this case) and a goal down in the extra time, when other teams would have simply succumbed to the disappointment or the blatant unfairness of the referee, the USWNT scored the equalizer in the 122nd minute.

Can you believe that? An equalizer in the 122nd minute. Talk about not giving up against the most unfair of odds, talk about a come back. Talk about justice.

This reminded of what America is all about. This win was so very typically American.

U.S. shows no quit.

For those of you who don't know who Hope Solo is, get your head out of the fucking sand and google her.

And this is how you sing a national anthem, not a a lip sync from a washed up pop star.

Hope Solo cover of the next SI Swimsuit, you heard it here first.

The answer to your question is 1) network 2) get involved 3) beef up your resume 4) repeat -happypantsmcgee WSO is not your personal search function.

Definitely an epic match. All the highlights are on ESPN if you want to see them all.

It was complete bullshit that they called that encroachment during the PK. The commentator is right -- it is never called even though it's in the rulebook and of all the matches they decide to lay down the law in, it's this one...

She looks good, no doubt, but I think she's got some competition from her teammates. Heather Mitts and Alex Morgan come to mind.

They can all share me instead.

I think you are talking about Brandi Chastain there @dwight schrute.

Hope Solo=too much makeup; still hot with it though. Alex Morgan=21 year old dime piece. Let's put it this way, most of us make more money than her boyfriend who plays for the Seattle Sounders. Why am I working the street again?

Watched the whole game live from start to finish. As a lifelong goalkeeper myself, the PK call was unbelievable. The odds are already incredibly stacked against the goalkeeper -- the fact that Hope had her save called back is ridiculous. In fact, it is incredibly common for the goalkeeper to take 1 or 2 steps forward right in advance of a kick to cut down the angle. Hope didn't even do that.

Either way -- this was a hell of a game and it's a shame that the entire U.S.A. wasn't watching.

Almost made up for men's loss to mexico last month. My hope is that the U.S will win the final and in an uncontrollable burst of euphoria, Solo will rip off her shirt a la Mia Hamm.

I'll take the blame (and whatever you throw at me for that). I'm just tired of people turning something that happens to all teams in all sports and saying it's "distinctly American." The French Women's team made it though in a very similar scenario this weekend. All this talk of justice, not giving up, bla bla bla... I've had the same crazy scenarios happen with plenty of other teams. Don't get me wrong, nothing is as exciting as a comeback, but it says nothing about us as a country, it's happened a thousand times before and to a thousand different teams.

Sorry If I'm being a sourpuss, and I'll agree to Solo being fly.

I agree. Whenever the US wins after being the underdog or not overwhelmingly the favorite in some kind of international athletic competition there's always some kind of bull shit rhetoric about the American Spirit being the reason for victory. Sure...the US Women's soccer team beat Brazil yesterday because they worked harder, they didn't give up, they were sooo American!! Instead of being born in places like Rio de Janeiro, they were born in places like Buffalo, NY! Title IX, favorable economic circumstances growing up, etc, had nothing to do with their success! It was their distinctive can-do American spirit!!!

Women's soccer is boring. All women's sports, except beach volleyball and foxy boxing, are BORING.

There. Someone had to say it.

Not that soccer is my favorite sport to watch, but may be the sport where watching the women's game is most similar to the men's game. About the same amount of excitement (goals), whining, faking injuries, etc.

GoodBread:
I disagree, it's like watching men's soccer after having given them sleeping pills. Which is still better than the WNBA.
The first thing I was comparing it to in my mind was women's basketball, so maybe that's how I came to that conclusion. I was thinking WNBA and some of the awful games I had to watch in high school, before my games would start. I seem to recall a girls JV game going into overtime in the single digits. I'm still a little scarred.

there was a stupid ad meme a few years back for the WNBA: "they can play better than YOU."

yes, pro women bballers can play better than your average couch potato. but the games are still awfully boring. the PC BS needs to stop. women's sports = boring.

and hope solo is not hot other than to lesbians and possibly some male fetishists.

someone had to say it.

Alex Morgan is much better looking than Hope Solo.. and Heather Mitts is also extremely good looking.
A 5 minute trip to Google images confirms Morgan as the hottest on the U.S. team.

She's the youngest member of the team and she scored today. She's hot as well.

Hope they come home with the cup now. Looks like it will be US vs Japan in the final.
