Not going to a target
Thinking about moving to a semitarget. I am also trying to find a finance related part-time. I think I can maintain a good GPA – do you think being a teller would do anything for my resume? I know someone who can hook me up with a job or internship, but I don't know what to ask for. Ofc, everything is delayed because of covid, and I’m concerned.
First of all, definitely transfer to UT Austin if you're recruiting for IB. Second, just ask your SVP what options are available to you.
"It's not about where you start, it's about where you finish" (not sure who said it but it's a good fucking quote).
Never let your head down, regardless of the situation. My 2 cents are transfer to UT Austin (get involved with clubs - not greek life - at Houston. You can always rush when at UT Austin). You have time, and this summer and next summer don't really matter to be honest. Just get involved with clubs and try to get some sort of finance experience after sophomore year. You have time on your side right now.
The most important thing right now is to keep your grades up, join a couple finance clubs to put on your resume, and start reading the news every day. Then, you'll start networking say mid to late sophomore year and you'll be in good shape. Just do your best and transfer to UT Austin ASAP.
PM me if you have further questions.
Sorry, I just made this account and can't PM for two days. I have heard many people talking of freshman year internships to give them an advantage. Given how competitive the industry appears to be, I would assume I need to do everything I can. Would you mind sharing your experience?
Look up UH’s Investment Banking Scholars Club (IBSC). 95% of their club’s alumni have placed in high finance. Network like crazy (since you have an advantage of being literally 5min away from where all the fucking banks are) and utilize the resources UH provides, then jump to UT if that’s what you think is best. It’s definitely possible but if you have a negative attitude then you’ll luck out even at a target school. As long as you have ambition and a game plan you’ll be alright.
I go to UH, so I feel qualified and obligated to respond.
What I’ve noticed is that the kids who really love finance here find a way to make it through. You are correct in saying that it’s not a target school, but I’ve found that at UH, the pipeline for who makes it into high finance it’s kind of self-selecting anyways. The kids with a genuine interest (as in they don’t just care about money) seem to do the best in terms of placement.
It’s hard not to be biased, but I feel that UH has improved dramatically in the last 2 or so years. Students here have placed at top banks with a couple of HF placements, in Houston and NYC.
It is more difficult, but with a high gpa, relentless drive, and a network, you can get a good job in finance.
Plus who knows? Maybe once you start your coursework you’ll realize that maybe finance isn’t want you wanted to do. That’s fine too.
Either way, you’re already ahead of the curve by thinking about this at 18YO.
My first day as an pizza manager they blindfolded me, and then proceeded to cum on me. After work, I never heard from them again, nor received payment. I was just wondering, what kind of pizza parlor is this? And why are we in an alley at 3 A.M?
UH alum
Those that are motivated place wherever they want to. The difference is they have to go out of their way to get it. At UT you'll benefit from all the on campus recruiting events and the school does a good job pointing you in the right direction and staying on you to make sure you get someplace. UH won't do any of that; you have to do it yourself via networking. Many from my class that were at least semi intelligent and highly motivated are now BB IB, S&T, front office at energy shop, energy shop supply/trading/marketing arm, etc.
Transfer, don't transfer, up to you but know either which way what each entails. UT classes I'd assume will be more challenging, but if you're making the cutoffs, recruiting comes to you. UH will be easier, but no dedicated recruiting, you'll have to get out there and do it yourself (take advantage of the fact that you're in the city with all the offices).
