I'm Such An Idiot (Resume Typo)
I've already applied for like 30 jobs that I'm really interested in, and I just noticed I have a typo on my resume. Specifically, I accidentally typed 2010 instead of 2009, so it makes it look like I'm embellishing my work experience by an entire year. Is there anyway to come back from this, if I actually get interviewed at any of these places? Or am I totally screwed? Also, if any of them do contact me for an interview, should I tell them about the mistake and send them a new resume at that time? Any other advice on the topic would be greatly appreciated. Thanks in advance.
Maybe this is a good time to cut my losses, and go "Back-Door Mark" mode.

Agree with Urine...it doesn't make you loo good...but if the experience is good, they will pay much more attention to that.
Unfortunately, the experience is not even related to finance at all. I'm an entry-level applicant. Oh well, I'll just keep applying to more places. I'm glad I found it before sending out more. Better late than never, I guess.
It's not likely going to matter. If they feel you are a potentially good candidate they will give you an interview. Chances are most people won't notice it because it's one of those small errors that the brain auto corrects when you see it.
If someone calls you to setup an interview just let them know you will send them an updated resume.
Regards
with cph on this one... seems to be one of those things that would get overlooked, but when you bring it up don't try and go along with the 1 year plus duration, just state how long you were there
Ive made worse mistakes on resumes then this and everything worked out fine. I spelt my own street name wrong hahaha
Haha!
What makes it wrose is that my street name is a very well known lake...
Typo On Resume (Originally Posted: 12/30/2013)
Well... I feel pretty stupid. I've been sending out resumes with a typo on it the past 3 weeks. If people have replied already, should I just pretend it never happened or should I resend my resume? (Since the typo is on one of the dates of my employment). I literally punched myself in the face over this. So much wasted time stalking down peoples' email addresses and half of them probably auto dinged me over this.
Some people might have missed it, but don't resend it and admit fault. Just fix it and move on.
Just send them an email saying that you got an updated resume. No big deal.

I've just noticed that I had 1 letter typo on my resume and it's going to be pretty obvious. Computer became Vomputer. Auto ding?
Pretty much
If it's at the bottom in "Vomputer Skills" or something then hopefully some people won't skim that far down and notice it. I once had a friend that accidentally sent a resume to BCG that said in the profile "looking for a job in investment banking" and got an interview. Many just look at GPA, work experience and then throw the resume into one of two piles.
vomputer? nice...i'd probably be willing to overlook it because i think that is AWESOME.
either way, don't sweat it, you can't change what's already happened, at least you'll fix it going forward
vomputer is actually pretty funny.

Sounds like a vampire vomputer! Here to suck your ink!

the more i think about it, the funnier it seems. i think i'm going to vomputer all over myself right now.
Analysts and associates going through a hundred resumes for first rounds will skim your resumes at best. If they happen to catch it, it may or may not be a ding, depending on who it is and how they're feeling that day. If you've got alot of great qualities besides your typo, it will probably be overlooked. To be honest, even if you're brought in for superdays interviewers don't read the resumes carefully (or at all) before they walk in the room to interview you.
To be honest I usually don't even get down to the Skills/Interests section on a resume, I spend about 30 seconds scanning the rest of it. If I saw it when we were reviewing it, it would look pretty funny. I personally wouldn't ding you because of something like that, although I know other anal Analysts/Associates who might if they were in a bad mood.
Bottom line is there's nothing you can do about it now that you've submitted it, other than fix it and move on. Not worth thinking/worrying about.
Resume screw up - what do I do? (Originally Posted: 10/10/2008)
So I recently (2 days ago) submitted my finalized resume to a few companies, after having it proof read by several friends.
I got a call today for one of the jobs I applied to, to schedule a phone interview. About 5 minutes ago I got a call from the same person, wanting to confirm my graduation date. Apparently my resume states Dec 2009 for graduation, when I actually graduate in Dec of this year.
Now I know it is my fault, and I have no idea how it happened, but heres the bigger issue:
The job that called me for the phone interview didn't care, just wanted to make sure I graduate this year. But, another job I applied for was through a connection I have, and I simply forwarded my resume to someone who requested it. I want this job 10x more than the other, and I'm afraid that they will see the 2009 graduation date and just pass by me.
What is the proper thing to do in this situation? I don't want to email the person again and be like, "Oh I can't pay attention to details so here is a new copy", but that's obviously what it is going to look like either way.
Any advice?
and pretend you're graduating early... or add something to it and hope they dont notice the difference in graduation date. i feel like most ibanks go straight for the GPA and experience part in resumes anyway so dont stress too badly
if your friend forwarded your resume to this connection then perhaps you can blame it on him for sending the wrong resume or something and just email your most "up to date" resume and hope for the best, otherwise you already know what you hafta do and theres really no way around it
I am applying for leadership development programs at F500 companies, so I think they will give the resume more of a read than IB's do.
I ended up just biting the bullet and sending an updated copy. Hopefully they will understand and not see it as an issue. Funny how it could get overlooked by so many people. I recall someone giving me feedback on my resume recently, and they mentioned the part that says "Expected Graduation: Dec 2009" relating to formatting, and I didn't even see the 2009.
Oh well, thanks for the advice anyways.
Own up that you made a mistake, No worries
Am I about to be auto-dinged? (Originally Posted: 10/02/2015)
The format of my resume is to have a bullet, the material, and end with the words without a period.
On the first bullet of the resume, there is a period......this period shouldn't be here.
How screwed am I?
I have contacts at multiple banks I've already sent this resume to. Should I tell them "Hey, there's an error on the copy I sent you. I've attached an updated (correct) copy." ?
Option 1: Say nothing and pray no one catches it. Option 2: Say something, and hope they look at the new resume instead of dinging me for being an idiot.
SAVE ME
Doubt anyone will be scanning your resume for periods. I'm pretty sure bankers have other higher priority tasks, and if they don't then they are enjoying down time--not scanning for periods
Definitely not worth bringing it up...
Whatever you do, do NOT bring it up..
Are you being genuine, or sarcastic?
I apologize, I realize this must sound like the dumbest question in the world.
You're fucked.
I interviewed with a MM ibank for summer analyst recently. I did AMAZING during the interview IMO (connected well, aced technicals, shared similar interests with the associate), but was ding'd. I asked my interviewer for feedback on why I was ding'd after 5 days, despite the fact that I did well. Apparently it's because the VP who made the calls saw that I had no periods in my bullet points, with the exception of 2, and he's anal about it.
Resume Auto-Ding (Originally Posted: 03/09/2015)
M&I has a resume template where Work and Leadership Experience are included as one section.......
Most resume's I've seen separate Work/Professional Experience (internships, jobs), from Leadership Experience (senior position in student groups).
Will my resume automatically be thrown out if I include Work & Leadership Experience as one section?
All advice is appreciated. I realize a resume one banker loves another might auto-ding. I just need to know if there are a significant portion of bankers who would reject a resume because of this.
Just separate them. That's how it should be done. Any attempts to make your resume better by trying to trick me by having both in one section would make me want to ding you unless you had GS, BX, or MBB on your resume. But if you had those, don't know why you'd try to combine them in the first place.
What if the volunteer / leadership position is the most relevant experience to the job? I think without highlighting it under experience, my resume gets thrown away anyway. Having it on there seems to yield more success even though people might not like it.
I combine the two sections. I have 4 internships and 1 club leadership position. Honestly if you ding me for that then you're a damn simpleton.
Do you have a job in finance yet?
If you would auto-ding someone for putting "Work and Leadership Experience" as one section on a resume, you need a fucking reality check.
