Imperial MSc Finance and Accounting vs Warwick MSc Finance

Hi everyone, I recently received offers for the MSc Accounting and Finance at Imperial and the MSc Finance at Warwick. The Imperial program seems like a no brainer, but because the Finance and Accounting programme is considered to be a step down from the Finance programme, will this have an effect on IB recruiting? Is it a better option to pick Warwick, as the MSc Finance is the top programme at Warwick (although this does mean I will not be in London)? Does the programme or the University count for more? Would appreciate any opinions on this, thanks!

Disclosing that I am a senior associate at a BB who did the MSc finance at Imperial College (“ICL”) 5 years ago, I would say that both are excellent programmes / schools. So, first of all, I say well done! Secondly, ICL would still be my choice for multiple reasons:

  • To live in London for the recruiting process and to network will make your life easier
  • ICL has a much stronger alumni network
  • Also, yes the MSc Finance of ICL is more prestigious than its younger sister F&A, but the latter places the most people in IBD within the whole business school and is much more aligned with what I assume you would want to do. Also, you can tailor the programme to your interest and have 95% of your classes aligned with the MSc Finance (I.e. you would be missing advanced econometrics classes... big deal).

Hi, I would have chosen the Msc in Finance at Warwick. The school has a much larger alumni network in Finance. Imperial has been around for a few years while Warwick has sent people for way more. I know you have chosen but for future students pick wisely. PS: Also, why did you not apply to the MSc in Finance (at the bear minimum???)

Yes, the FT, a UK newspaper, is obviously biased towards French schools... They disclosed all their ranking criteria and all of these programmes are amazing (and so are the ones we are discussing).

I used to work in London for a top American BB and a very high % of people are alumni of all these schools. HEC Paris / LSE / Oxford / Cambridge / ICL are especially well represented.

I agree with HEC but the others please... I know the ranking but the overall reputation of the university is way more important than just a ranking. I also worked in this field and have several years of experience behind me. I can assure you that the overall name of the uni is way more important than a ranking.

Oh I agree with you on that point: a school’s reputation is extremely important. What I am saying is that ICL is one of the best school in the world, which obviously translates into the outcome of its MSc Finance suite (also explaining delta in expected salaries no doubt). Warrick's name outside the UK is yet to built. 🎩❤️👌
