Incoming IB Analyst - Familiarization with CapIQ, FactSet, etc.

Going into my FT IB Analyst role next summer with literally zero experience in CapIQ and FactSet. Is it worth spending this winter/spring familiarizing myself with each software? Or are they pretty easy to learn on the fly?

Also, I'm unable to access either software through my university - is there any chance I could get access / learn the software via another source? Thanks!

No, I would say it’s unlikely to get access to other sources. All of these programs are INCREDIBLY expensive. My honest advice would be to not worry about it. They teach you how to do them on the job and they’re really not that hard to use. If you’re truly worried about it, you could pull up some YouTube videos to just get a primer and familiarize yourself with then. What would be more productive and the following months before your internship starts would be: make sure your Excel and PowerPoint are up to speed, make sure you have a decent knowledge of your group (If you’re going into Tech, be reading tech primers and industry reports), and finally, after the New Years, start reaching out to analysts to network with them, regardless if you have an offer already. It helps build rapport before you even start.

Yeah I’d just say getting on their radar. Now that you have the internship offer, it’s a different type of networking. You don’t have to kiss up or anything, I would just genuinely ask them questions about the job and what you should be doing beforehand. If they tell you to start readying XYZ industry blog, then read it and in a few weeks, follow up and tell them you’ve really enjoyed reading. Just that type of stuff. That way, when your internship already starts, hopefully you’ve built pre-existing relationships, which will help you when getting work early on.
