Indestructible Phone

Why are phones so damn brittle? It's bullshit. Just make them out of fucking steel. I'm tired of breaking these stupid things. Has anyone figured out a solution? Are there cases out there that actually work? Anyone use one of those CAT phones?

You would think it would be an option just like Thinkpad makes milspec laptops. I guess it comes down to the case. Phones are going to get more brittle because they are edge-to-edge glass.

Be excellent to each other, and party on, dudes.

I've literally never broken a phone.

You're gonna break one this month now that you have stated this in writing.

The phone Gods are angry with you and need retribution.

I have an LG X Venture. It's a rugged phone, has a metal frame, marketed for outdoorsy types. It has an IP68 rating in regards to ingress protection re: dust and water resistance, along with U.S. Military Standard Drop shock-resistant testing certification.

I hike a lot and do a lot of outdoor photography with it, as it's often easier to handle taking pictures with it on uneven/slippery trails versus using my point & shoot or my DSLR.

While I haven't dropped it over 8 feet and haven't dropped it in water for 30 minutes, I have gotten it wet. It's surviving nicely so far for being owned by someone who considers herself a klutz. I keep a combination silicone cover/hard plastic case on it along with a tempered glass screen protector. Without the case, it's got a nice textured back, which is easier to grip if your hands get wet or in the cold. Going to Alaska with it soon and while it won't be bitterly cold yet, the X Venture also has a sensitizing feature for using it with gloves.

Considering it sells for around $325, if I can't get 2.5 or 3 years use out of it [most of my phones last me over 3 years before battery or other glitches crop up], I'd have no qualms buying the same model again.

I bought it full-price when it came out last fall.

Can only swing a week this time around, already blew threw 2 weeks of vacay this year. Flying to Seattle this Saturday, staying overnight. Then we cruise, we'll hit Juneau, Ketchikan, Skagway and also Victoria BC. Depending on what we like the most, ideally we'll go back in a year or two and stay inland for a full week or 10 days.

Already lined up hikes for the Mendenhall Forest/Glacier in Juneau, Ketchikan and BC.

Figured Skagway we could just wing it and wander.

Whereabouts did you go on your Alaska? Any favorites? Any recommendations?

That's just not true. I had the first droid smartphone with gorilla glass and it was tougher than anything I've had since. I literally snapped my last phone in half after the screen broke.

haha dude I think I am with you in the same boat of = breaking everything/anything with a battery

Maybe I just move around a lot or something, but I seem crack/crush/destroy everything possible in terms of mobile electronics.

Smart watches (on the destroyed list) this year:

1) Fitbit Ionic - Pressed button in Ocean swimming, dead.

2) Apple Watch 3 - New Yorker stepped in front of me on bike, watch to concrete, dead.

3) Fitbit Versa - Skateboard fall to concrete, cracked. Stepped on face in bike cleats during T1 in last Half Ironman transition, dead.

I currently have insurance on the Versa, so getting a new one (I like that watch).

This led me to purchase the longest battery life most indestructible smart watch on the market.

Cases work.

Yeah, I had an Ottercase that worked well, but was really missing a good Kunt, so got one of those charger cases from Kunter and it was super cheap and have accidentally thrown it against concrete and metal (yes I am also a Ukranian Construction worker).

I think it would be smarter strategy for Apple/Samsung to make their phones tougher or expand storage/battery life vs shaving weight every year.

I don't know a single person who wants their phones to get any lighter, while everyone wants durability and extended life. Of course this could just be a strategy to have consumers buy phones more often...

''Shut up and take my money'', the thread.

Have you figured you could just stop buying Iphones? No, well, Mom is happy, you are a good kid.

I think if you can get the really old Nokia candybar phones those would be the most solid. A friend of mine worked at Nokia, and they have a story where an Indian guy dropped his phone into the ocean, and a few weeks later got a call from his old phone. A fish had swallowed it, gotten caught by a fisherman, the phone was found when the fish was gutted, and after a quick charge was still functional and the fisherman got the phone back to the owner. Probably smelled like bass though.

It was presented to me as fact by the person who led Nokia's phone business in South Asia. Maybe her story was apocryphal maybe real. No denying though, those Nokia candybar phones were as close to indestructible as any phone I've ever seen.

Nokia re-released it. You can get one now for $59. https://www.nokia.com/en_us/phones/nokia-3310-3g

man - that looks way too fancy

I liked those old Nokia phones. Black and white display, bars on one side, battery life on other side, could also play games, like snake.

So which Android phone can I get now that is near-indestructable AND has a LONG battery life? I want it to last 2 days on a single charge. No point having a phone that always runs out of power. For me, battery life is the real killer app. I think the Google Pixel is supposed to be good, as are Motorolas. Anyone know of a long-lasting phone, ideally durable as well?

Is anyone else astounded by how commonplace it is to replace $1,000+ phones every year? When there is nothing wrong with the old one and they keep getting "better" but for what? All these girls walking around with $1200 iPhones are just taking selfies and scrolling through instagram. I was not aware, but apparently phones are status symbols too. My wife told me that girls look down on people who have Android phones. No other possibility besides not being able to afford an iphone enters their minds as possibilities for why someone might not have an iphone. Maybe I'm wrong. My understanding of the modern female is just what my wife tells me about all her teacher friends. Most of them are idiots. But yo is nobody else seeing this crazy fucking hamster wheel?
