Industry Thesis Building
My firm (MM PE Firm, $1B+ AUM) does not have a standard method of preserving notes and key insights on various industries and sectors we look at consistently. Curious to see if there are any PE / HF folks whose firms have a tight process for memorializing industry findings (notes, white papers, resources, etc.) in one spot that's accessible for the whole team.
Any insight on this would be greatly appreciated.
In terms of organization: Do you have a shared drive? If so, set up an "Industry" folder and have subfolders for the major industries you cover. From there, make subfolders into the subverticals within each of those industries.
In terms of content: My firm is big on deliverable / document creation, so we memorialize all our industry work into 5-50 page decks that summarize all the junior team work. These decks are shared with the senior team members as reading material, but they also serve the benefit of helping future junior members when someone wants to revisit an industry project.
Sounds like this requires a bit of a culture shift among the folks you work with. Speaking from experience, it's a little tough to get people to change their ways (especially if your work environment is particularly cut throat). It's worth a shot 100%, just make sure you don't get taken advantage of or inadvertently volunteer to be the custodian your firm's industry research.
Really helpful. Yeah, we have a shared drive, I think the challenge relates to your caveat around designing a system that's not too disruptive to how folks already work / allowing it to be managed by a single person. CRM integration comes to mind here (i.e. somebody looks at an opportunity in the dental space, all they have to do is tag the correct industry and subvertical and someone can automatically scrape the CIM / banker notes / any other relevant stuff from that process into a centralized folder).
Our CRM is a bit of a headache, but we're considering switching over to Dealcloud which I've heard is great.
Thanks again for the thoughts.
