Informational Phone Call-I'm white...
I had an informational interview today and somehow we started talking about the SEO program. He said it was great for people coming from a non-target school. He was also from a non-target and worked at Lehman before going to work in capital markets, so I valued everything he said.
After we talked for a while I asked about internship opportunities and he said they don't offer and I asked if he could reference me to anyone he knew in IB. Said he doesn't have many contacts.
So I went to this SEO website and it looks like a great program and is highly sought after. Except for the fact that it is for "students of color". What the fuck? I clearly see my fellow pale skinned folk in the pictures.
So at that point I realized the guy I talked to must have taught I was of Asian decent due to my last name, Lee.
Under their FAQ's there's a question "How does SEO define a student of color" get ready for this really detailed answer.
"SEO asks applicants to self-identify i.e. if you consider yourself to be a student of color, you are welcome to apply. The racial and ethnic classifications on the SEO application are adapted from the 2010 US Census."
What? So if you think you are you are? I sent them an email with the subject "I'm White" asking them if I can apply and to clarify what they mean.
Everyone wants diversity and racial equality. How do we expect to accomplish that by separating different races? It's completely counterproductive and against the very meaning of equality! I see this so much in my search for a internship. If there was a program for only white people, the Rev Al Sharpton would piss himself and there would be pandemonium. But when the white man is excluded everyone turns a blind eye.
Long Story Short: Got nothing from the phone call. White people suck. And I have an Asian last name. Maybe I should just apply anyway?
Relevant:
In all seriousness, I'd be careful about applying. A white friend during high school scored exceptionally well on his PSAT, but as a joke he decided to mark his race as Black. Fast forward a few weeks and he gets a nominated for a National Merit Scholarship reserved for black students. He was fined and had to write a formal written apology to the association for his actions.
I don't think the same will happen to you, but I wouldn't take my chances.
lol that's hilarious
HAHA sucks for that kid.
If Europeans kids can apply for SEO, idk why white Americans can't. go for it.
Yessir.
One thing i'm going to say though, do not underestimate the SEO kids, i know some of your guys on here talk down on them, but the ones I've at my school (Asians, Black, and Hispanic/European) they are all on top of their shit with high GPA's. I am just speaking for the ones I have met at my school, idk about any of the other ones.
I guess they classify EU kids as "underrepresented". I'm applying as "white" but think I'll get a better shot if I say my last name originated from past Asian ancestry.
I sent them an email with the subject "I'm White" --- F-ing dead.
As usual it's open season for white males, the most hated group in America. I'm a believer in actual equality.
Trump 2016
You must be drunk. I am pretty sure black/muslims remain the most hated group in America, its fucking cute (and indicative of your entitlement) that you think white males are "the most hated". Honestly, it takes balls to opine about the "white male struggle" that doesn't exist, while I am sitting here recruiting for FT and I look up company websites and every single employee in any position of power is a white male (must be rough for those guys). As an aside, keep hating on SEO kids while they do their thing. My frnd did SEO > SA BAML > FT MS Tech > Centerview Capital > FB Corp Dev. He seems to be doing quite well for himself, and I doubt he gives a fk about how he got in.
