Input from Energy Traders: TransCanada
Looking at summer internships and just wanted some general feedback about TransCanada. Does it provide a good learning environment if I am interested in natural gas trading? I know that Brian Hunter once worked there but not much else besides what I could gather from their website. Thank you in advance for the input.
Yes if you are interested in natural gas trading this will look good on your resume and be a great learning opportunity. Transcanada owns a large network of pipes and working for them will be a great way to start learning how the pipeline network across North America works. Do you know what your responsibilities or what business unit you will be working for?
What division of TC, your not talking about a small company there. They are huge.
Would you be working with the Mainline team?
Thank you for your responses McMo and adehbone. I don't have an offer from TC. I have been reaching out to people who work in energy companies and a guy at TC asked for my CV. If my ultimate goal is to eventually get into natural gas trading do you guys know what is the ideal business/team that I should be aiming for at TC?
No idea how they setup internship programs over there tried to search the site, no real news. A generic application looks like for summer students. I know they have laid off alot of people recently as the Mainline is hurting big time.
But if you really are into natty, they do have a marketing/trading division. So aim to land something in that area. Try to see if you can get a role that has exposure to either the Mainline, ANR or AECO storage. Again I have no real idea how the producers setup their divisions and I know TC is under restructuring right now.
A position in contracts or risk would be great too for an intern I would say.
Thanks for the additional advice adehbone! I agree with you the TC website is a bit generic but I will shoot for a position in their marketing/trading division. If you don't mind answering what is your opinion on Nexen Inc.? Do you know if they provide a good learning environment for an energy newbie?
we trade with them but not a lot of volume.
I beleive historically Nexen has traded mostly natty in the NorthEast, Northern Canada and Midwest USA.
They are a good shop, but the major issue currently with Nexen is the same as Sempra, there is 3-4 buyers about to give their bids soon for "Nexen Marketing", most of the the top dogs have left or been snatched by other firms. Not sure any of this matters for an intern, but by this summer if that is when you expect an internship very likely they will not be called Nexen Marketing anymore.
