INSEAD admit Q&A

Hey all, wanna b MBB (Kellogg Q&A) and others recently have moved me to do my own Q&A. Like them, I have benefited from the forum immensely and am happy to give back by answering any questions you may have about the application process and my rationale behind applying and matriculating at INSEAD. My Profile *Top Canadian Uni, semi-target bschool undergrad <3.5 GPA, specialist in econ / accounting *2 years at Deloitte / ACN as a BA, 1 year as an M&A Consultant, 1.5 years in different advisor-type roles at a large telco *730 GMAT *Solid extracurriculars (club leadership / founder in school, moderate involvement as alumnus) *Top recommenders (had the chance to be led by VP/Partner level guys who were happy to put the time in and write good content for the recommendation letters) *URM / international

Thank you!

INSEAD is a 1 year program (one of the reasons why I chose to only apply there, I didn't think the opportunity cost of a 2 year program would be worth it given the stage I'm at and my academic background).

  • I looked at my MBA as a way to take a break from life, travel, build a network, and advance my career - you can kind of tell how that would put me in the LBS / INSEAD segment
  • I'm planning on trying to get into MBB, and INSEAD offers arguably the best chances of any school globally
  • The culture and opportunities to work internationally sound very attractive

yes! Utoronto Rotman.

  1. What led you to want to apply to INSEAD?

- I answered above, it was a combination of my career goals, 1 year format, and travelling / intl work opportunities

  1. How much does prestige of undergrad matter in MBA admissions?

- I'm not sure to be honest, I have noticed that naturally INSEAD students from Canada tend to come from the same schools (UToronto / Mcgill / Western / Queens)

  1. If one were to achieve a GPA of 3.7

I have: there are a ton of ex-MBB consultants (~70% of people I've met), some IB / HF people (~15%), and the rest come from typical management backgrounds or entrepreneurship.

I'd say your role definitely affects your chances, but more so how much progress you've made since graduation. One thing in common among the people I've met is they all have 1-3 promotions already by the time they apply.

Thanks for doing this, INSEAD is currently my top choice with my interest in working in APAC and the fact that you can finish the program in 1 year.

  1. Is it really necessary to have 4-5 years of experience? Would it make a big difference it I applied with only 3-3.5 by matriculation?
  2. You mentioned that 70% of the people you met came from consulting. My experience is not too prestige heavy (BB Ops 1 yr and currently in Corporate Strategy for a small public tech company), does INSEAD mostly look for those that are in consulting?
  3. Is there a big difference between the 10 month program and the 12 month program if I want to go into general management or consulting?
  4. How likely is it for an American Citizen to get hired in places like Singapore or London?
  5. What is a common non-consulting/ibd path that you see people take?
