Institutional asset management exit ops?
Many insurance companies have institutional Asset Management groups, that manage a large amount of the company's capital.
What would the exit opps be for someone who was a research analyst at an insurance company's (State Farm) institutional am group?
Bumpity bump
That is a great question. I am a research analyst at the asset management arm of an insurance company. I would think you could move to a more traditional asset manager, although your resume may not be as strong as other candidates. It would likely depend on whether or not the insurance company is total return or buy and hold (have no clue about State Farm). Moving into a desk analyst/ PM role or to another desk at the insurance company would be options. There are lots of variables at play – equity or FI role, willing to relocate, are you a CFA charterholder, etc.
A lot of people tend to love it and stay around awhile. I have seen people go into public finance, I-banking (crazy right?), hedge funds, other AM type shops though. So you can really do a lot with it, especially if you get your MBA.
