INTERNAL AUDIT OR FINANCE
I'm applying to GS, MS, JPM, & BlackRock for their Internal Audit & Finance divisions. I am a junior Finance major with a 3.4 GPA (yes, I'm aware that my GPA isn't great). I can't really decide which division I would prefer. What can you share about bonuses, room for growth, and work hours in these divisions? Also, which of these firms do you think would be best for these 2 divisions? Thanks!
This is a troll right?
Why would this be a troll? Has it ever occurred to you that people actually use these forums to ask for advice? I don't get it.
Because this board is generally for people interested in high-level finance...
Do you have any idea what the firms you listed do? Do you have any idea what the actual job function would be that you are applying for?
Here's why he's asking - if a hundred people read the title of your post, I cannot imagine a single one said "Internal Audit!" People can make good careers there, I personally know people who really like IA, but as a headhunter once told me, "IA is where careers go to die." If all I know about you is that you're a finance major, and you're asking this on a finance oriented forum, I have enough info to believe you should pursue finance.
Background: I'm an accountant who spent way, way too long in audit. Don't do accounting or audit as a "safety job," if you want finance then pursue it.
great question ... i think of it as job functions involving raising and allocating capital
Internal Audit Vs. Finance Intern (Originally Posted: 03/08/2016)
Hi all,
I am a sophomore majoring in Accounting and Finance from a private school in the Midwest. Since I can't look to do any IB internships this summer, I was able to secure a couple offers in other areas. I am looking for any guidance in regards to which position I should accept for this summer and why? I was wondering which one will look better when I go to apply for internships after my junior year.
The offers are:
Finance Intern- Public firm, financial services industry Internal Audit- 20 bn Private company, unrelated industry
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks
Thanks
Love to help, but could use some more detail about the finance role.
If your goal is IB you shouldn't need to ask this question.
recruiting advice (audit vs. finance internship) (Originally Posted: 07/12/2017)
hey guys, i need some advice and just wanted to hear some thoughts regarding my situation. i have am a rising junior with a 3.5 gpa attending a non target school and am decently involved on campus . i currently have a junior yr summer audit internship offer for a big4 accounting firm (offer lasts until the end of the summer). however, i have an interest in finance and am wondering if i should reject the offer and attempt to recruit this coming fall for a more finance related internship. my network is not the best and i have pretty average stats, so im wondering if its worth trying to recruit and risk giving up this offer/not getting anything better during the recruiting cycle. alternatively, i could take the audit internship now and try recruiting for finance during my senior year, however, i know it is very difficult to land a wall street job when you don't have relevant internship experience or a particularly extensive network. just wanted to hear some thoughts regarding what to do. thanks!
Audit will kill your soul.
But in all seriousness take the audit offer and still recruit for banking. If you get a banking offer take it and renege the big4 offer (if banking is ultimately what you want to do). My story is non target -> big4 intern -> big4 audit -> IB. So I have seen both sides and understand where you are coming from. Let me know if you have any other questions and I ll answer them honestly
This. Accept the offer. However, audit life is pretty shitty. You'll work banking hours, get way lower pay, less do less fulfilling work.
thanks for the response! haha yeah ive heard quite a bit about audit and am really unsure about it tbh. what about audit made you make the switch to banking? also how was the recruiting process/how did you make yourself stand out from people with prior banking experience? also how did your audit and banking experiences compare? sometimes i feel like banking could potentially be even worse than audit? sorry for all the questions haha
also im kind of scared to renege on an offer? im scared that maybe in the future, i might want to go back to that company/possibly do a different service line and reneging now would prevent me from doing so?
