Internally Switching to IBD at Goldman Sachs?

I am currently going to be working as an Investment Management Sophmore summer analyst this summer at GS, and I was wondering if anyone could provide some insight surrounding the feasibility of transferring into IBD for next summer. Would it be just as difficult as someone who was not already working at the firm? Since applications are released during my internship in July, would it look poorly for me to switch divisions at such a time?

Thanks in advance!

Switching definitely will be tough, but not impossible. Fair amount of people will switch from Investment Management to IBD through mobility. You have to have fantastic end of year reviews though, which may be tough given circumstances

Curious too but as a Junior summer analyst in its CIMD. Recently, I ended up deciding to extend my graduation 1 year due to a desire to change to IB and the probability of lower job offers for CIMD. I want to have another summer to intern in IB and going back to GS would be ideal but I am not sure how they will take me extending my graduation one more year.

I did mobility from my sophomore summer to junior summer at GS. Honestly not that difficult if your team is supportive. In a way it's expected for sophomores to do something different their junior summer. My team encouraged me to look at other groups and division and if wanted to stay in my current group I was welcomed to. I will say, it is easier switching groups within the division than it is to go from IMD to IBD. I say that because the division spends a lot of time recruiting you and investing in you, and they don't necessarily want you to go to another division and they may try to convince you to look at other teams within CIMD. You will get an email roughly 3/4ths of the way through the summer about internal mobility and as a sophomore is a pretty straight forward process. maybe 1-2 interviews with the group/pod you are interested in, assuming you networked before hand, and you're pretty much good to go.

again Its honestly not going to look that bad as a sophomore. GS strongly encourages networking. Your team may even ask who you've had coffee with and you can let them know and give them a reason that sounds nice (ie looking to learn a bit about other parts of the business/how IBD and IMD might work together/or you met with a TMT analyst cus of a tech pitch you did and you want to see how they think of x company/sector from the banking side. the usual bs). Make it about learning not about screw my group I want to do IBD. again.. as a sophomore.. no one is holding you to the same group or division, its pretty common for sophomores to do different things junior summer (albeit I will say I know some PWM sophomores who had trouble lateraling but most likely because they weren't prepared)

One HUGE advantage sophomores have is that you will have your pick of group/team. you have the whole summer to really deep dive into the different groups within IMD/IBD/S&T and literals call that team up, spend the summer networking w them, and if they like you you will have a very strong shot at landing that specific team your next summer. Use that to your advantage.
