Interning- how to ask PM amount in AUM for nascent fund?
I would like to find out the AUM number for the fund in order to put it on my resume. I also want to be able to have a good frame of reference before approaching the boss to request going from unpaid to paid at some point down the road... ie, AUM x fee rate for rough estimate that the fund is generating.
I'm obviously a noob, so I was wondering if it's alright for me to ask. While it definitely seems like he has a decent number of investors so far, it's a new shop that started last year, so I'm assuming that it isn't a whole lot yet. Any input is appreciated.
Prospectuses/ fact sheets will have expense ratio. If you don't wanna ask PM directly you can talk to the Marketing/ Inst'l guys for AUM. They'll know.
Shouldn't be too hard to ask the PM for the AUM, I'm sure he'd like to brag about it lol just frame it as "how much has the fund grown over the past year" etc etc

Yeah I know his expense ratio, just a matter of trying to figure out how much capital he has to work with. Just wasn't sure if it's awkward/impolite to ask him. Could definitely see working the "how much growth over past year" angle. Thanks for suggestion.
If you can't find the fact sheet you can go talk to analysts/associates in the office. Or just ask the PM during a normal conversation, like you can ask his career path and how big is the fund now. Yea he'd be happy to brag about it lol
I don't see why this would be a big deal or a secret. Just say that you're curious and you want to know.
Most funds brag about their AUM.
Okay, thanks. I guess it was kind of a silly question...just was pretty curious as to whether or not I would look like a douche as a new intern asking that.
ETA: By the way, no analysts or associates yet...just him and another guy are essentially Co-PMs. I would essentially be doing the work of an analyst it seems. I will pick up a lot of the modeling and research work he had previously been doing.
Go to the SEC website where you would typically look for a 10-K. In the "Company name" field type in the fund's name and find their filings. Look around for a "D". This will give you some frame of reference for how much outside capital they have raised. Combine this with an estimate of the two PMs' net worth prior to launch and assume they put a chunk of it in with outside investors. Then apply the returns since inception and you've got a rough estimate of capital (which is not AUM).
