Internship Advice — Tips

Hi,

Senior at non target school, recently started an investment banking internship with boutique about 3 weeks ago. Really greatful for the opportunity the firm gave me, but I’m doing a terrible job. I need advice on how to get better in the 6-7 weeks I have left.

I thought my job would be financial analysis so I learned financial modeling. But my job is all writing and industry research, which I just realized I suck at. I can’t find any of the data my analyst asks for and always end up with a bunch of corrections for biographies and company profiles that I get asked to do. I really want to add value with my work, but everything I do, the analyst ends up just doing himself again. Other interns are a lot more involved with creating excel models, powerpoint slides, taking notes on phone calls, etc. which I get since their deliverables are really professional. I just hope to do that type of work too in the remaining time I’ve got left.

The office is small, 3-4 bankers and they’re all great people, especially my analyst who is super patient with me.

Any advice on how to build research skills and find useful data online, we don’t have access to any research platforms (practincg my writing in my own time). Also how can I add value with the tasks I’m assigned with? Don’t want to keep dissapoinying the team. Any feedback would be greatly appreaciated. Thank you.
