Internship at insurance agency
I've just finished my first year of college and I've got an opportunity to gain some experience this summer. The firms services include: retirement plans, wealth management, financial advising, and insurance solutions. However, from the reviews I've read online about the company, I've became a little skeptical. Some are claiming that it's a "MLM scam" and is essentially cold-calling customers and selling life insurance. Others are saying it's a great place to work at, but these seem fake. I take it if I was to land an internship there for this summer, it would be pure commission based since that's what the others are saying.
Basically, my question is, how useful would this be for somebody trying to break into the a HF in the long term? Should I try and find a position at a different company for this (freshman) summer?
Since you seem very skeptical, I'd pass. It's only your freshman summer, do something you find interesting or travel somewhere instead. Just make sure you are ready to hit the ground running for sophomore summer internships and, most importantly, junior summer internships.
Internship in an insurance company and after? (Originally Posted: 11/04/2009)
Hi!
I had to do a 6-month internship and had to contact IB during the worst period of the financial crisis (i.e. October 08 - April 09). Finally, I decided to do my internship in the Finance department of a huge European Insurance company.
Up to which point this experience could be used to look after an internship in an IB or a boutique? Would you be honest and say "I was lucky enough to find an internship in Finance" or say something like "we often talk about Bank/Finance/Insurance and I wanted to try the last one"?
By the way, I have already a first (but short) experience in a HF.
