Internship at regional office of BB, to London FT IB. Possible?
Hi WSO,
I have an SA IBD internship in London with a lower-tier IB (SocGen/Nomura etc) this summer. I am also invited to an AC for a mid-tier BB's (Citi/BoA/CS) regional office, regarding an off-cycle M&A internship in the coming Fall. Their group is currently the best in the region.
However, if would decide that I want to start my full-time career in London, would an internship in the regional office in any way hinder my chances to get a FT offer (not necessarily the same bank) in London?
Thanks!
Some background:
Currently in a MSc in Finance at European target school
Bachelor's from a non-target (same region as the BB office)
Hey quire2, I'm here to break the silence...any of these links help you?:
You're welcome.

Yes possible although quite hard. Your best shot would be to work in the regional office for 2 years and then move to London - this is done quite frequently and adjusted to COL you're better off as an analyst in continental Europe than London.
Why didn't you recruit directly for London for off-cycles?
Thank you for your input. Yeah, I guess that would be the most common path.
As for why I didn't recruit for London: A combination of things. I wasn't sure about if I wanted to do an off-cycle until a little too late, some programs were closed since I already applied for SA, and some I haven't heard back from.
I have worked for two years and an half in a continental office of a American BB bank, before moving to NY. What I saw in that period is the following: - I was offered the chance to recruiting for London during my internship in Europe (I declined) - Once we started having 2 interns per cycle, with one analyst spot available, we started offering to the analyst who was not receiving the offer the chance to interview for London with success rate 100% (i.e. we were only pushing forward the good candidates) - Of the four analysts that were hired after me, while I was still there, two moved to London after 2.5 years, one after three years, and one left for continental Europe PE in another country after 2.5 years - If you get the offer for the office and you want to start straight in London, it is generally unlikely they will allow you to do so
My advice is not to start as an analyst at SoGen or Nomura if you can start also in Europe at Citi or BAML. My friend and I, both from Top American BB in continental Europe, ended up at Top Equity Growth Fund in London (eg GA/TA), Top American BO fund in London (eg CD&R/Warburg Pincus/Bain Capital) and highly regarded European Mid Market BO fund (eg Triton / Eurazeo / Investindustrial). You would not be able to get there if you start at SocGen / Nomura, unless you change to another bank (although people would still questioning why you started there).
Wow, thanks for sharing. Quick question, are you American or European? I would definitely turn down London if there would be an opportunity to move internally to the US after a couple of years in the regional office.
Great job getting into those funds.
