Internship at the UN as Both Economics and Political Affairs with an Interest in Career Transition to Banking or Consulting

Dear my fellow professionals,

I'm a recent graduate from one of the top 20 universities with a 3.6 GPA. I was lucky enough to get interviews with bulge bracket firms and some other Fortune 50 firms. However, since I'm an international student, when I finally decided to settle for a position related to business research, there was some delay with my work authorization and it did not workout well.

I double majored in political science and econ, and I have applied both legal and finance related positions. However, most positions that I heard back from were related to legal field, when I'm significantly more interested in pursuing career in finance/ consulting before pursuing JD degree.

But thankfully, I heard back from the United Nations for internship positions in various departments as political affairs and economic affairs intern. As I believe that it would be an incredible experience to interact with very high-profile clients and would have invaluable opportunities to learn and grow, I was hoping to have career transition after taking this unpaid internship. Legal related positions do pay the bills, but I was hoping that this UN internship position could allow me to have the leeway to have career transition into consulting or banking (Wealth/ Asset Management).

Before committing to any position, I wanted to make sure that banking or consulting firms appreciate the UN experience, because I'll be using my OPT to work, UNPAID, for about 4-5 months.

I would love to hear your thoughts, if you are in banking/ consulting or was in a similar situation, struggling with sponsorship.

Thank you!
