Internship Canceled, Now What?

Hey everyone, I had my internship with Related canceled for this summer as a junior in college. I really want to be somewhat productive this summer to become a better candidate going forward with CBRE/CW/JLL and am looking to see if I should shadow a few CRE brokers, get my salesperson license and maybe get Argus certified (is it worth the cost to make it standout to employers)?

I want to be in Investment Sales and was hoping if anyone has any pointers, thanks!

Hey! Fellow student here in the same exact situation so I'm really interested to hear what others have to recommend. Personally speaking though, I've tried applying to pretty much every open position I can find between Chicago and Dallas but haven't had much luck, especially with so many other students in the job market right now. Just as an example I saw a posting on LinkedIn for a super small shop developer (like 2 employees working out of a wework small) that had 200 applicants by the second day it was up. With that in mind I'm not really hopeful that I'll land something solid for the summer so I'm just focused on getting my brokerage license and maybe some kind of financial modeling certification. I do have the option of returning to the very first place I interned at, but I'm a bit hesitant since the position'll probably be unpaid and I don't know how it would look on my resume to have

super small shop -> awesome team at big three brokerage -> other big three brokerage -> super small shop again

But seeing as how these are pretty tough times for everybody I figure I might as well go back if I can at least join as a broker once I have my license and hopefully get some experience helping out on some deals.

Anyways, I couldn't help but check out your comment history to see if you'd gotten advice about this on another thread and saw the question you had about fall internships which I figured I might as well answer too. I spent most of this past school year interning at CW, plus I know they had my same position in the DC region since they're the only reason the pay got pushed up to 20 an hour for the rest of the interns haha. I know some other classmates that did winter programs at the real estate practices for RSM and Deloitte, which I heard are actually pretty decent at getting you exposure to underwriting, one who had some luck extending their summer internship at JLL through the school year, and another who was at HFF. Just looking at job postings online I'd have to say there was a pretty good school-year internship that caught my eye about once every 3-4 weeks, as well as a few others at small shops that my school's real estate program would email the students about. With all of that said, I'm in Chicago which is a fair bit larger than DC but if you look around I'm sure there's bound to be some postings online, or if all else fails maybe reach out to some real estate professors(?) I know some that are very straightforward about their willingness to help students find something.

Hey thanks for the detailed response! That's awesome that you were able to land an internship with CW in the past. I may try to figure out networking into CW or JLL in DC during the school year; heard there's been a hiring freeze for now but it makes sense if there's more clarity within the next month...

I get what you're saying about your concerns with moving back to the smaller shop but I think something is better than nothing and all brokerages are hemorrhaging at the moment.

How did you land an internship with CW? Was it mainly through solid networking?

I actually didn't do much networking for the CW internship, I just happened to jive really well with both the recruiters and the actual team that I interviewed with. My boss even mentioned once that they knew I'd be a good personality fit when I mentioned I had plans to see the Rocky Horror Picture Show after my interview haha. Other than that though I feel like I did a good job conveying how my previous internship experience at another JLL/CBRE/CW type shop could translate to what they were looking for with the role, and it was mentioned that they were looking to fill the position quickly so it was literally, interview one day, second interview the next day, and then internship offer by the following week.

Also I don't think I mentioned it in my previous comment but real sorry about the cancellation with Related, sounds like it would have been a solid opportunity. As somebody who's really hoping to land a role in development myself though, I'd love to hear what it was like going through the interview proccess with them (if you don't mind sharing of course)

Good to know with the CW interview process! Sounds pretty chill, from what you're conveying the key is to have a great personality more so than the technicals which definitely makes more sense for brokerage. Sounds like you were really able to strike while the iron was hot at the perfect time.

Thanks for the condolences. The interview process was surprisingly easy with Related it was similar to your experience with mainly focusing on personality questions instead of any technicals. Basically the process from start to finish was: connecting with an alum on LinkedIn and had a conversation with him over the phone about what he does and what he likes about the company. He was in lease management so nothing I wanted to do but basically he told me to apply in about early October and once I sent in my application I asked him if he could write me a short recommendation and he vouched for me and sent it to the HR manager. The HR manager was a bit cold and I didn't hear from her for a few weeks and my alum connection kept asking her for any updates. Got an email out of the blue at the end of November about setting up a typical phone screening interview. It went well with her, the questions she asked like what I do in finance (my major) what type of experience I have with financial modelling and why I want to work at Related, very easy questions and was like a conversation the whole time. She said she'll pass along her reviews to the departments and she'll let me know by December if any of them want me. She went ghost and I assumed I didn't get the job until I received an email from the Operations department in February that the SVP wanted to interview me over Skype. Skype interview lasted under 15 minutes and the guy asked very simple questions like why real estate, what do you want to do with your life, what do you like, what do you not like. It was easy as hell. Week later received a call from HR that the guy thought I was great and he wants me on the team. Had to sign the offer letter within a week.

Overall it the interview process was stupid easy but extremely dragged out. Hope that helps.
