Internship help - Interested in ER

I am seeking the advice of WSO here on my internship search.

I am interested in an equity research career, and as most analysts on this board, they likely started out with an internship somewhere. Likewise, in looking to start my career, I am looking at internship possibilities, and in doing so, I am looking for the guidance of the WSO community on the following concerns.

As a background, I don't have any finance work but I will be getting my masters at a target b-school next year after graduating from undergrad in 2011.

1. Without any prior finance work, is it imperative I get an internship?

2. How helpful is an ER internship (as opposed to, say, a PE internship) in getting a FT offer?

3. If I can't get an ER internship, where are the next-best finance industries to intern? IBD? PWM? Private Equity?

4. What's the best non-finance job to help in an equity research career?

Thank you so much for any help this community can provide! It is very much appreciated!

Best Response
  1. Not imperative, but very very helpful

  2. Not that helpful. An internship in general is very helpful, but the marginal value of an internship in ER rather than PE or IBD would be very low, if positive (could be better to get an IBD summer analyst/associate internship, even if you want to do ER after school)

  3. See #2..all would be viewed similarly. Only advantage of getting an ER internship is that it shows you're interested in ER.

  4. There are a number of jobs that would be helpful...basically anything that gives you industry expertise would be helpful in breaking you into ER in THAT INDUSTRY. Or jobs that require attention to detail, deep analysis, and if possible, writing. Just like every other career, getting into ER is about showing that your past experiences (whatever they may be) have adequately prepared you for an entry level role in ER
