Summer Internship in China

I am currently a rising junior at a semi-target school preparing for recruitment, which is happening very soon. I will be spending the entire summer interning in China, and have just started the job at a PE firm, which does not really match my expectations of what the job would be like (there's too much due diligence and menial work that do not involve any modelling work).

I was lucky enough, however, to have come by an opportunity to switch to some Chinese IBs through referral, and I have a couple options to choose from.

So I have three questions:
1) Is it going to be a lot better for IB recruitment if I have an IB internship rather than PE
2) what are some Chinese IBs that have somewhat of a name recognition? (CICC is among my options)
3) how should I handle the departure from the previous firm if I choose to leave the internship only a week into the job

Thank you all in advance for the responses, cheers!

I can't speak to all of your points, but given that you're only a week in they probably are starting you off small before they hit you with modeling. You should talk to whoever is coordinating your internship or someone who you're comfortable with and let him know of your expectations/what you want to gain from it, and whether you can expect to do modeling work.

I have a friend that does internship placements here in China... primarily in Beijing. He started off by doing placements for Cornell University's Peking U. Semester abroad kids, but now he also does some "private placements"... it's a pretty lucrative field over here - a lot of firms do it. Internships are easy to come by in China if you speak english (they need people to write materials), but internships in finance are much tougher to get (I guess that's the story everywhere... but still). If all they do is find you a non-finance, unpaid internship, you shouldn't be paying more than 10,000 RMB for the placement services + rent.

I did a China internship 3 years ago with a HSBC and am glad I did. I now work full-time with HSBC in Client Relations and although I paid $3,000 for my internship, it was a good deal for me in the end. I admit my internship was almost slavery but the 90 days passed quickly and doing all the odd jobs nobody else wanted to deal with paid off with a full time position. I just got engaged to my Chinese partner and we will have a better life in Shanghai than down under. I found this recent article on the net and I agree that China is the best place to launch a career right now until the western economies bounce back. People who want to pursue the China option should just Google "China back door jobs interns"

Your "slavery" experience probably does not compare in any way to a normal IBD internship in a developed country such as the US. Did you do your internship during a summer while you were still in college or after college? How do you know that you will have a better life in Shanghai than in Australia? What are you reasons for saying so?

I would disagree saying that it is the best country to start a career in, especially in finance. Have you read about the credit/shadow banking issues? M&A activity is low, at best. China experiences slow growth. It is the first year China will not be able to reach its own target of 10% growth which it could make some good use of right now. I don't see why China is the best place to launch a career right now when the outlook in developed economies is way better, especially for White college graduated from a decent school. (Let's talk about racial profiling and discrimination in China/Asia!)
