Internship+ Working+ School
Good Evening fellow chimps,
Facing turbulent times and I could use some advice. I am attending - with only one internship (assistant to a Financial Adviser) under my belt. I am currently getting - place so I will have to work part time to support myself. Has anyone worked part time done an internship and aced their coursework? I'm very anxious about the future. On the positive side I'm having lunch with a fellow works in a PE shop in my building. My current boss is also giving me a referral to a guy who is supposedly starting his own firm. She was not too specific about his work assuming its PWM. Fighting an uphill battle with my GPA and thats my primary concern I would like to end up in an elite boutique or mm. I do not know if its realistic to expect anything from a BB at this point. Thoughts?
There are plenty of people who do that dued. Just make sure to have solid time management skills. Not to brag but, I work full-time while go to school full-time and still have a solid GPA.
All you need is a great time management skills, just like the life you gonna live when in IB, less sleep more work.
Keep your head up and just start hustling. It will payoff eventually.
Best of luck.
Thank you, Its good to know that it has been or can be done! Coming to the hard realization that I'll have to sacrifice my social life and chasing tail (biggest weakness). Curious as to how you stay motivated?
The way I stay motivated is I keep my eyes on the prize, look at the bigger picture. You get into IB hustle for two years and all the doors open to you, the world is yours (assuming you dont get fired or not a shitty analyst #humor) . you can go into Corp. Dev. PE, HF, wherever you wanna go. I look at the end goal, If i work hard now for next 4-5 years I will be able to live the life I wanna live.
To me great internships outweigh no internships and a great GPA. Work skills are transferable. Look to land an internship that pays well enough and has good enough credentials to replace your assistant job and PT job. Good Luck!
Thank you for your insight! Any opinion on how to value a prospective internship? Ex. Small PWM firm vs Small Equity shop. I assume size of fund or work relevance. Fingers crossed for this lunch today (PE shop informational).
Something that is bigger and potentially brand name that will help you as you apply to your next gig. Chose the Equity over PWM unless your goal is PWM.
You should be asking yourself is this opportunity going to springboard me to a better one and ultimately get me closer to my goal career.
It's definitely possible. I've been working internships and part-time jobs at the same time as a full-time semesters since freshman year. It helps to stack all your classes on two days, so you can do full work days the other three days of the week
Nice! Do you work out? I'm trying to decide if I have time for my BJJ (1 hour class). Do you schedule your day to the minute? Good to see hustle out here!
I don't really work out haha, but you could probably squeeze it in on work days in the afternoon and weekends? Nah I don't schedule down to the minute, but I keep my phone calendar pretty detailed to stay organized. and I try to efficiently make use of longer breaks in between classes or downtime at work to study or do some homework.
I work pretty much full-time as an analyst during school... my GPA took a hit but the experience has been invaluable & I really needed the money to support myself. I'd recommend it, but I'd try to limit yourself to 20-30 hours a week.
May I ask how you landed that position? I assume good old networking. I'm currently looking for an analyst position. Options are limited in the N.O. How much social life, personal time etc. did you find yourself having to cut?
